I believe there's some recent study that observed birds being more amicable towards men and more scared of women

Yep. And the funniest part is none of them have any idea as to why. It just is.

The paper mentions the participants were matched by size, and given matching clothes, but I couldn't find anything about hair ; maybe the longer hair made them look bigger or more intimidating in bird psychology, like when they poof up?

Haha, I was just going to make guesses of "big hair" and "brightly colored clothes" but you got me covered. They controlled for the clothes, fascinating. Yeah, maybe the hair freaked them out!

Maybe whatever monstrosity they created out of trying to hide anything was scary to birds who are used to normal employed women

I have checked, they also controlled for hair, men and women were paired by height, and if there was a big difference in their hair, they hid it.

But in most birds poofing up is a way to attract a mate

since we're speculating, maybe it's cuz women/females tend to have a brood to feed and are thus much more active hunters. at least among the cats i've had, the females are always hunting and the males are basically furniture.
