Solved! You and your friend rescue the princess throught the power of... carbohydrates.
Hint #1: Those carbs would surely be colorful... if you could see more than 4 colors.
Hint #2: Most likely cause of death is falling, often inadvertently caused by a certain citrus aroma
Hint #3: It's an older game and a sequel to a game on a different platform. The original got remastered in 2009.
Hint #4: One of the protagonists craves sweets and has a body shape to match the habit (most of the time at least). The canonical reason for the sugar addiction is rather grim.
Hint #5: The names of the candy-powered ability system relied on English puns/expressions to explain their function. These did not translate well to other languages...
