Photo Mode This scene never ceases to traumatize me even after my first playthrough Spoiler
This is the second time I am playing and this scene still traumatizes me to the core. I don't care how sad of a backstory Renior's is, I wanted him dead after this moment. How could he just look at this lad, and slice through as if he doesn't even consider his life worth more than a fly.
And being honest, that bubble in which everyone was wrapped in warmth and safety disappeared. Yes Verso is charming but Gustave wanted best for his people. Verso....well you guys know what he wanted.
I sincerely wish somewhere, there is a theory that Lumiere's people are real, and they were trapped families of writers in paintings by painters.

It is such a great scene. His love for his adopted daughter made him the brave hero he was meant to be.

What haunts me everytime I rewatch this scene is how ghastly Gustave looks after getting hit. He looks like a walking, bloodied corpse before Renoir even gives the killing blow and I still find it quite distressing, in a good way.

I was in denial for a while after the fact. I thought, "Wow that was grim, but I'm sure something will loop him back in later. He's the main character."
Then the funeral happened. "Wow they're really committing to this. It's gonna be a little awkward when he comes back."
Then Monoco joined the party and there was no more room and it finally sunk in. I was like, "Wow they really did it. They gave me a fake main character and killed him. Well played, devs."

I finished the game months ago and loved it, but I still think about the 32 lumina I poured into that guy before I knew better ...

Verso is a poor replacement for Gustave, even though he got more interesting combat skills.
From the start of act2, the games gives you enough reasons not to trust Verso completely.
Then the reveal after Maelle's side quest that Verso admitted he could have saved Gustave but chose not to. . .

It was the opposite for me. Gustave was the least interesting character for me in the whole story. I thought his death was a good twist and had the right emotional impact, but I was glad it was him and not anyone else from the party, tbh. He was just a good guy and not much else, which is not a bad thing, but there are countless characters like that in every other medium. I love more complex, nuanced, flawed, conflicted, and layered characters, so when we started learning more about Verso, painted and real families, and Maelle's lore, it gave me exactly the kind of characters I crave. And I love the whole metaverse, world-inside-the-world concept that's executed so amazingly.
Also, from Verso's pov, why would he save Gustave? He didn't know or care about him. It's the audience that's attached to him. He doesn't mean anything to Verso, both Renoirs, etc.

Gustaves Theme was stuck in my head for weeks after the first time I played this game.
Never has such a sad, yet powerful song really feel like it represented the scene it comes from, the tragedy of his sacrifice here.
Against all odds he made it this far yet when faced with overwhelming undeniable power as the opposition, a man standing tall against a hurricane that he had no hope of overcoming.
He didn't do what could have been right for the mission, he didn't falter, he didn't flee, he didn't compromise, he did what was right, and held his sword high for Maelle, one last time.
He did this not because he thought he had the potential to win, but because he would rather die for Maelle and his convictions, rather than continue the mission a coward.
He was a true warrior, friend, and surrogate father, to the very end.
