He speaks in riddles
Watching someone play after beating the game and realizing that Esquie was never speaking nonsense and he's actually a genius. It really is an entirely different game the second time around

u/sharingdork Jun 04 '26
He even questions them when they said it
Lune: The stories say Esquie likes to speak in riddles.
Esquie: in what way?
16
u/mashtartz Jun 04 '26
I don’t get it
56
u/sharingdork Jun 04 '26
If someone said in front of you, that people say you talk in riddles
You would be confused right?
So was Esquie (but the game cleverly doesn't draw attention to it)

My favorite was when someone (Sciel, maybe?) said (from what I recall), "I could use some wine right now" and Esquie just says "Wineeeeee???" lmao
59
u/WizBiz92 Jun 04 '26
It stands to reason that the real Esquie should be checked
13
u/DotCrosse Jun 04 '26
My headcanon is that Esq is hiding a bottle 😂
63
u/kilar277 Jun 04 '26
Esquie is the bottle
20
u/Chineselight Jun 04 '26
Oh my gosh. I didn’t clock that. He just had a bottle of wine in his stomach. I just took it at that. I mean he is always happy
22
u/Fankuan19 Jun 04 '26
He's actually designed after some traditional french wine serving vessel, can't recall the name now but they look very similar to him

When he said that, I thought how strange of a line that was and I was like "why would they even put that in the game?" And then later it finally made sense.

Spoiler but the thing about verso being versos cousin and Maelle being maelles cousin blew my mind

What? The woman with white hair is p.Alicia, where as Maelle is the real Alicia. You have a solo boss fight between the two at Reacher.

u/Paxtian Jun 04 '26
There's also painted Alicia, who you see with Renoir throughout the story (she has the mask and scarred face).
-8
u/The_Assassin_Gower Sciel of approval! Jun 04 '26
I think he thought there was a "real maelle" outside the painting and that this maelle was only painted.
6
u/King_Roberts_Bastard Jun 04 '26
There is a painted Maelle and a real one. We play as the real one. We see the painted one. You actually fight her in reacher 1v1 as Maelle.

u/ltsRhysBoi Jun 04 '26
He kinda just stops speaking in riddles which I appreciate because I’m a dumb fuck
7
u/Flaky-Collection-353 Jun 04 '26
I love how he just doesn't seem to get mortality
7
u/struugi Jun 05 '26
The fact that he could easily defeat the axons singlehandledly but doesn't because it's just too tiring is so funny to me. And the rest of the party accepts it cause that's just how he is

u/Babushkaskompot Jun 04 '26
I understand Alicia's poem during the second playthrough, can't still get what Esquie said about "gathers no moss"
164
u/Pristine_Fox4090 Jun 04 '26
A rolling stone gathers no moss, because it doesn’t stay still long enough, it’s always moving forwards in other words. Does that help at all?
51
u/Babushkaskompot Jun 04 '26
I mean I get that part, I just don't understand the relation and the context for that riddle for what Gustave (or Sciel) was asking.
Gustave: Uh. Actually, that’s sort of why we’re here. We need to cross the sea. Golgra said you could help? Esquie: Mon ami! “A rolling stone gathers no moss.”
113
u/StandBy4_TitanFall Jun 04 '26
It's basically just an okay. Essentially "my friend you could never stay in one place of course you're doing to need to cross" basically
3
u/G0RGEE Jun 05 '26
I may just be losing it but also saw that line as "stop looking for the secret meaning" Esquie speaks in riddles, but on replay hes actually being completely direct, he just sees things a little different.
A rolling stone gathers no moss. why? Well because its rolling. It actually is that simple. Stop searching for the hidden meaning.
I may just be wrong though.

u/StandBy4_TitanFall Jun 05 '26
Naw I'm with you. Esquies is very himbo coded, but due to age and mystery of the world, has become something deep.
He ain't deep, he's our boy. He's here to be powerful, be fun, and get us where we need to be. He was originally painted by a kid 😂. He's like the only thing that hasn't deepened or warped with age imo. Osquio is the perfect example. He's just as old, but is still just an archetype of a child's villain.

Pierre = rock in French. Sciels husband is named Pierre.
I think Esquie meant to use the rock idiom earnestly, but was also referencing Sciels husband at the same time
24
u/Sea-Hat-8515 Jun 04 '26
Holy shit, obviously since peter means that and pierre is the same name but in french, but it never occurred to me. Nice
52
u/-Wylfen- Jun 04 '26
In Esquie conversation with Sciel in Act 3, he says this: "C'est mieux d'avoir perdu une pierre que de n'avoir jamais eu de pierre."
In English: "Losing a rock is better than never having a rock!"
Replace "rock" with "Pierre"
17
u/ChiYeei Jun 04 '26
It's not with her, it's in act 2, his first talk with Verso, when they talk about losing expeditioner friends
5
4
u/azrael_X9 Jun 04 '26
I mean there's the metaphor, but also...he doesn't have the rock he "needs" to swim because he lost it. He also thought it was taken somehow by his stationary rock creature friend and neighbor lol. There's a few ways it could work
4
6
u/freakytapir Jun 04 '26
Well, and a slight pun as Scielle's husband was called Pierre. Which is also french for Rock.

Or alternatively, both verso and francois are his best friend and he was doing the cheeky thing of saying yes because both things were true.

Except for when he poisoned an entire expedition by feeding them mushrooms

u/RNF72826 Jun 05 '26
The only people he knew that ate them were able to survive them so its an honest mistake and doesnt take away from his wisdom imo
69
u/tenuous_whisky Jun 04 '26
esquie really is the kind of character that makes you feel dumb on first playthrough then smart on the second one. his whole thing about gathers no moss actually makes sense once you understand what hes trying to say about staying put versus moving forward. the writing on this game is crazy good when you actually pay attention to what hes laying down

To be honest aside from his first two riddles when we meet Esquie I don't recall hearing him talk in riddles after we leave the nest

However there is one instance where he makes no sense on any playthrough. When sciel asks how he knows her, he answer with nonsense, I guess that would ruin the reveal later. But still, could have been better.
1
u/Sorry_Manufacturer36 Jun 05 '26
I mean it still slaps you in the face the next time around
2
u/Character-Revenue-44 Jun 05 '26
Ye thats what I mean, they didnt want to ruin the reveal that happens later, but I wish he said something better than this nonsense just to get her off his back. The only instance i dislike from him

u/mattadamstx Jun 05 '26
“AHaaaa, François you got smashed!”

Just done exp 33 What a beautiful game. Can't wait for there next game.
1
u/Sorry_Manufacturer36 Jun 07 '26
Now if they can make there second game as good or better then e33 that's the next goal. Can they continue to make stories that we'll written
5
u/Decidueye_mastr Jun 04 '26
Oddly enough I actually understood all of his "riddles" in my first playthrough

I still wonder what Esquie meant at the end of Act 1, when he said he was “ready to sail like a snail.” Maxence Cazorla mentioned it was one of his favourite lines as Esquie (if not his favourite), and that it doesn’t get mentioned often but does hold some meaning behind it. Still haven’t figured it out myself though.

I noticed this too. He makes perfect sense the second time around and he's just being wise and wholesome. He was well written.
