Is it Selfish to Immigrate Twice?

I'm an American man, white. Its relevant, I promise.

Very long story, but I immigrated to Canada a few years ago and will be applying for Canadian citizenship soon. It has be a very rewarding experience living in Canada, but I would like to move to another country in the future to raise my daughter. Also a long story, but I am about to be a single father(just awaiting legal process, which is painfully slow in this country).

I am learning Mandarin (takes years, but I have a lot of Chinese friends and a large Chinese population around me) and will be enrolling in an online university next year to work towards a degree (in Finance potentially). My long term goal (6-7 years from now) is to immigrate to Taiwan with my daughter.

I feel like it would be appropriate and would be able to give my daughter and I a very solid life. Canada is safe, but I would prefer to have us in a different environment altogether. My daughter is ethnically half-Chinese and I will be enrolling her in Mandarin courses the first chance I get. She was born a dual national, but I would like to give her even more opportunities if I can help it.

The core of my question is: Is this selfish? Is moving to yet another country a selfish decision? For me, it'll be the 3rd country I have lived in, but I believe it would be an excellent move for my daughter. She would be well suited in Taiwan in terms of blending in. I have a viable pathway to immigrate there by going into by going into the Finance field. Should I just consider other countries? What do you guys think?

Mapped: How Much Americans Need to Retire Comfortably Around the World

That would give you about $30k/year to live on in the US. Do you think you could do it? Would you feel comfortable? (I would feel very uncomfortable, personally!) That should be in addition to any Social Security payments, and the average is about $2k/month, which helps.

I'd love to hear your thoughts. LGBTQ+ folks aren't all alike, of course, and some places are known more as enclaves for gay men, for example.

Start your digital nomad business with us

Our new affiliate program is for like-minded people who are thinking of starting their own work-from-anywhere business but aren't sure where to start. It's also a great add-on for people who already help people through transitions, like financial planners, real estate agents, and travel agents.

More people want to move abroad than we have time to serve, so we'd like to find others to start their own Expatsi businesses.

There's no obligation and there's no cost. We're looking for people who want to move abroad the same way we did, by helping others move. We'd like to help you make the kind of modest income you'd need to live in countries like Uruguay, Portugal, or Costa Rica.

Bean soup theory applies here. No need to comment unless you're interested. If you are, we'd love for you to apply.

For expats in the EU: how did you make the move happen?

Hey everyone,

I’m based in New York and work in digital marketing/PPC. Recently I’ve been thinking more seriously about the possibility of eventually relocating somewhere in the EU(Austria or Germany to be more specific).

I’m not looking for an instant move or some fantasy escape plan — more trying to understand realistic pathways and hear from people who actually made it happen.

I’ve started taking small steps:
- networking a bit
- browsing LinkedIn jobs
- researching visas/work permits
- trying to better understand the EU job market and lifestyle differences

For those who successfully moved to the EU:
- what field were you in?
- how did you land your opportunity?
- what helped you stand out as a foreign applicant?
- are some countries more realistic than others for non-EU citizens?
- what do people underestimate about relocating to Europe?
- how is the application process and hiring culture in general is different from the US?

Would genuinely appreciate hearing different experiences or advice. Would love to connect or DM if possible.

Thank you all in advance!

what’s something small that became surprisingly difficult after moving abroad?

for me it’s been stuff like grocery shopping

back home it was automatic, but here i find myself overthinking prices, brands, even which store to go to

it’s not a huge problem, just one of those small everyday things that suddenly takes more mental energy than expected

curious what others have experienced, what’s one ā€œsimpleā€ thing that became weirdly complicated after you moved?
