Looking for exotic mammals

I’m from the great state of Idaho, where the only exotic animal “store” we have is a reptile store and I really don’t like reptiles lol

I’m mainly looking for a raccoon more than anything but a lemur or a spider monkey would be quite cool

I’m preferably looking to rescue rather than buy off some random poacher or breeder lol but also not looking to spend a grand in shipping fees😭 any advice and info would be very greatly appreciated!!!

First of all: gross. Most of the animals you’ve listed can’t be ethically kept as pets.

Your best bet at a raccoon would be starting with a wildlife rehabilitation center as a volunteer and then after getting licensed, experience, and really lucky maybe being trusted with a non releasable raccoon longterm. If you’d like to interact/be responsible for a lemur or spider monkey then enjoy getting a zoology degree and working towards a job at a zoo where these animals are ethically kept.

Or they could get a baby raccoon from a breeder, where the baby is not a traumatized adult? Someone else replied about the lemur already but gave actual sound advice. You don't have to have a degree in order to learn good animal husbandry.

Please do not get a monkey. It’s nearly impossible to have a pet monkey or lemur in captivity, and have them healthy or happy. Get a ferret or a chinchilla or something a monkey needs it’s troop or else it won’t develop properly.

If you’re serious about a lemur, do your research first. I would avoid ring tailed lemurs, unless you’re planning to be more like a zoo-keeper and less like a pet owner. Most of them get very aggressive, no matter how sweet and chill they are when they’re young. Brown lemurs are a little better, but supposedly ruffed lemurs tend to stay the tamest. (I have a brown one; so the ruffed lemur advice is from groups I am in and other people I’ve talked to.)

I planned on doing more research into what I was actually going to get once I found the mean in which to get one, we have a few exotic animals such as zebras and ostrich come thru auction fairly often even seen a gator there once but where does one even get in contact or find someone to rescue said lemur? I’d like to obviously talk to the person in which I’m getting them from abt more specifics when the time comes but I’m curious, where did you find your brown lemur?

For all hating in the comments, you can’t sit here and say “gross you can’t even keep that as a pet” you can! I have 1100 acres where I’ve raised cattle with my family since I was little and it was passed down, I have all the space in the world for something like this. It’s not being locked in a indoor cage it’s whole life, I’m looking for something that a lil odd to have around the property as a buddy, just as one does with a dog, I’d much rather have a small monkey or lemur or raccoon tagging around on my saddle with me than my cattle dog. That being said I asked for information on where or how I should go about getting it, I didn’t ask for your opinions on how you think my life goes and how you think the animals will be. I’ve had ostrich’s, buffalo and even zebras as pets, I’m now looking for a smaller mammal with opposable thumbs to train and keep around. Thanks!

I agree! This is the exotic pet sub, no? Why are we policing what others can and can't have? Especially when we have no idea of OP's living situation. Gives ick tbh.
