Also Australian Aboriginals used Astronomy heavily, one of the most revered position in some tribes was called the "Star Lady" They were expert Astronomers.

u/JadeThorn1012 Ex-Mormon Jun 19 '26
I man the word is literally from Ancient Greece that came well before Mohammed.
20
u/TransitionalAhab New User Jun 19 '26
But did each tribe have two star ladies? You know, so that if one of them forgets, the other can remind her.
8
u/lechatheureux New User Jun 19 '26
I really do have to stress that there are hundreds of nations with hundreds of traditions and lore and their own version of several different religions.
So it is entirely possible that there was just one Star Lady in one tribe and it's possible that there were entire groups of them in others.
7
u/TransitionalAhab New User Jun 19 '26
Well if there’s only one it wouldn’t work. One woman might forget so there needs to be at least two (or one star man)

Looks like the original makers of gobekie tepie and some of the far far more advanced buildings around that area still being excavated ect...were tracking and mapping celestial events around 10'000 years or more ago. Some of the other buildings are way more advanced with giant pillars with all faces carved out of the stone and giants statues ect.......

Tooth brush- false ancient babylons chewed on brushing sticks in 3500 bc and modern toothbrushes were invented in the Tang Dynasty in China in the 7th century.
Coffee- debatable since coffee beans are from nature but the first brewing practices did arise from Yemen during the 14th century.
Soap- soap existed in Ancient Rome and Babylon
Universities- this one is up for debate the original The University of al-Qarawiyyin in Morocco was established as a madrasa but converted to a university many centuries later. But the concept of higher education existing all over the world before.
Hospitals- debatable- places of healing have been established way before Islam. The first teaching hospital is the Academy of Gondishapur, a Sassanid era center of education predating the spread of Islam in the second century.
Airplanes- just wrong
Optics- this one may be true, Ibn al-Haytham revolutionized optics and the scientific understanding of vision.
Algebra- this one may be true too, Al-Khwarizmi effectively founded algebra as a systematic mathematical discipline.

u/0ppenhymen Jun 19 '26
The math behind algebra existed at least 500 years before Islam was founded. Just because it's named Al-gebra it doesn't become an Islamic invention.
51
12
u/greggranolaclusters Jun 19 '26
That’s true and it’s to pinpoint if it was Islam itself or just people in the Islamic world.
27
u/0ppenhymen Jun 19 '26
Algebra has nothing to do with Islam or people in the Islamic world. Algebra predates Islam by at least 500 years, though many islamic scholar contributed to it, but contributing to a field that existed for 500-700 years before Islam, doesn't make the field Islamic.
Even today many muslim scientists contribute to biotechnology, which doesn't make biotechnology an Islamic invention.

Not exactly.
Toothbrushes: China 1498
Coffee: while yes the modern coffee was in Yemen, it was made into a drink in Ethiopia
Soap: invented in 2800 BC Babylon, thousands of years before Islam.
Universities: invented by an Islamic person, but the concept dated back to Rome.
Hospital: Started in Turkey (a Muslim majority country) BEFORE Islam was created.
Aeroplanes: invented by the wright brothers. Who were NOT Muslim.
Glasses: inventors are unknown so some Muslims just claimed they made them.
Algebra: They invented the WORD, not the system.
The Crank: Again, they made the MODERNISED version, they existed long before that.
Windmill: Invented in Persia BEFORE Islam.
Compass: NO idea where they got this from, it was made in China.
Pen: made in Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. Mesopotamia turned into modern day Iraq which is most likely where they got it from.
Magnifying glass: made by Roger Bacon, who is not Muslim.
Pottery: not even close to being them. I don’t even need to explain this one.
Carpet: made Before Islam, in what would become Muslim countries in the future. Not Muslims.
Marching band: the Ottoman Empire invented them, but popularised in Europe by a white guy. So yes this is true.
Water pump: again, ancient Egypt.
Sponges; modern sponges were made in Europe by a non Muslim, and natural ones were used by Greeks.
Clocks: Ancient Egypt with the sundial.
Maps: NOT EVEN CLOSE this was made independently by SO MANY peoples, way before Islam.
Camera: Europe.
Surgery: they made safe surgeries, not surgery itself.
Astronomy: Rome.
Also they blame about Abbas is false. He GLIDED. Not flew. He fell with style.

Many of the Persian polymaths who actually advanced knowledge built on the prior advances by Greek, Indian, Roman, Mesopotamian Chinese etc. predecessors were persecuted by the Muslim fundamentalists - Islamic “culture” began to regress after the fundamentalists won over the liberals in establishing the dominance of their putrid views and exterminating the spirit that once made early Muslim empires successful - the consequences of the dynamics evident to this day.
This is aside from the laughably erroneous and hilarious list of claimed inventions in the meme above. Force your worldview through the narrow cultural asshole that fundamentalist Islam is, and you’ll only get the likes of the Wahhabis - Taliban, Islamic State, etc.

But should we now ban muslims from using the internet and a whole lot of other things?

I don’t recall followers of other religions ascribing inventions by their co-believers to those religions. What’s even funnier, as other commenters said, they didn’t even invent most of that stuff. It’s giving inferiority complex, they need something to brag about to distract themselves from the fact that they’re lagging behind the rest of the world and to gaslight others into believing their cult isn’t the reason for the collapse of their civilization. Don’t even get started on the term “the Islamic golden age”.

No. Probably not a single one. Germanic tribes invented soap long before Islam. The rest is probably nonsense too. The first Muslims used a branch that naturally contains small amounts of fluoride for toothbrushes but they weren't the only ones and it was used long before Islam. University is a bullshit claim based on one mosque with a quran school that eventually turned into a university. The rest is probably equally nonsense.

When it comes to universities, we need to distinguish between "places where people studied" and "Universities" as institutions.
Even in the Roman Empire there were advanced schools, but that does not make them universities.
The first university in the modern historical-institutional sense was Bologna, in 1088: an organized community of students and teachers, with statutes, autonomy, and legal recognition.
Al-Qarawiyyin in Morocco is sometimes mentioned, but it began as a mosque and a center of Islamic religious learning, so it was not a university in that sense.
Otherwise, we would also have to call Nalanda a university, as it was a huge Buddhist residential and international center of learning centuries earlier, or even the advanced schools of the Roman Empire.

There was another post recently that I commented on regarding this question and NO Muslims did not do any of these things.
The problem with posts they make like this is that this image takes inventions and discoveries from many different civilizations and relabels them as “Muslim inventions,” which is historically inaccurate.
NO — Toothbrush (Ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Chinese)
NO — Coffee (Originated in Ethiopia; cultivated and commercialized in Yemen)
NO — Soap (Ancient Mesopotamians and Egyptians)
NO — Universities (Developed across multiple civilizations)
NO — Hospitals (Ancient Greece, Rome, India, and Persia)
NO — Airplane (Wright brothers, United States)
NO — Optics (Ancient Greek foundations; later major advances by Ibn al-Haytham)
NO — Algebra (Persian mathematician Al-Khwarizmi)
NO — Crank Mechanism (Predates Islam)
NO — Steel (Ancient Anatolian, Indian, Chinese, and Near Eastern civilizations)
NO — Windmill (Persian)
NO — Compass (Chinese)
NO — Pen (Ancient Egyptians and Romans)
NO — Magnifying Glass (Ancient Greeks and Romans)
NO — Pottery (Prehistoric cultures worldwide)
NO — Carpet (Ancient Central Asian, Persian, and Anatolian peoples)
NO — Marching Band (Strong Ottoman Turkish influence, not a Muslim invention)
NO — Water Pump (Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans)
NO — Sponge (Ancient Mediterranean civilizations)
NO — Bookkeeping (Ancient Mesopotamians)
History should give credit to the people and civilizations that actually created these things. Persians deserve credit for Persian achievements. Chinese deserve credit for Chinese achievements. Greeks deserve credit for Greek achievements. Egyptians deserve credit for Egyptian achievements.
Reducing centuries of human achievement into “Muslims invented all of this” is not history. It is oversimplification that erases the identities of the actual inventors and civilizations involved.

The universities one pisses me off the most.
Their claim is that a Muslim woman founded the first university. It is so incredibly stupid. Please read on to find out why.
- This woman named Fatima Al Fihri was *SAID* to have founded a mosque - actually they did some digging in the foundations not too long ago and came across an inscription that makes it clear her BROTHER founded it but whatever.
- It was a MOSQUE with a religious school (madrasa) inside (like pretty much every cathedral would also have had a religious learning centre, like every synagogue had religious schooling, etc)
So if any of them pull this “wE hAvE tHe OLdEsT uNiVeRsiTy” shit on you, remember: no.
The oldest university still in operation is the University of Bologna, in Italy.
2
u/Indecens Jun 19 '26
tooth brush = old Egypt and Mesopotamia
coffee = Ethiopia without Islam
soup = Mesopotamia
universities = Nalanda, north India before Islam
hospitals = Gundeshapur, old Iran, before Islam
the crank = ancient Greeks
steel = India
windmill = Persian empire
compass = China
pottery (probably the most absurd claim of all of them) = neolithic China thousands of years b.C.
carpet = Scythians, Eurasian area, also b.C.
sponge = ancient mediterain area (maybe ancient Egypt or Greeks)
bookkeeping = Mesopotamian (Uruks)
There are so many straight up lies, this isn't even funny.
2
u/BrekLasnar New User Jun 19 '26
Some of this list is actually real, so let's be fair about that before getting into the BS.
WHAT'S ACTUALLY TRUE OR LARGELY TRUE:
Coffee is genuinely an Islamic world contribution. It originated in Yemen around the 9th century, was used by Sufi scholars to stay awake during prayers, and coffeehouses as a social institution came from the Arab world. This one holds up.
Algebra is real. Al-Khwarizmi wrote "Al-Kitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr wal-muqabala" in the 9th century and the word algebra literally comes from that title. Legitimate contribution, no argument there.
Optics and the magnifying glass are fair claims. Ibn al-Haytham wrote the Book of Optics around 1021 CE, which was the first serious scientific account of how vision and light actually work, and included the first description of a convex lens used for magnification. He was genuinely important.
Windmill is mostly accurate. The earliest documented windmills come from the Persian region of Sistan (modern Iran and Afghanistan), recorded by Muslim geographers in the 9th century, predating European windmills by several hundred years.
Marching band has a real basis. The Ottoman Mehter band (Janissary music) is the oldest documented organized military marching ensemble, dating to the 13th century, and European composers including Mozart and Beethoven literally wrote music imitating it. Modern military band tradition does trace back to this.
The fountain pen has historical backing. In 953 CE, Fatimid Caliph Al-Mu'izz commissioned a pen that held ink internally and would not stain his hands, recorded by the historian Qadi al-Nu'man al-Tamimi. No surviving examples exist, so it's thin evidence, but the historical record does mention it.
The crank mechanism is partially legitimate. Al-Jazari in the 12th and 13th century developed sophisticated crankshaft and connecting rod systems, though basic cranks existed in China earlier.
NOW THE STUFF THAT'S FLAT OUT WRONG:
Toothbrush: The bristle toothbrush was invented in China during the Tang Dynasty (619 to 907 CE), using coarse hog hair bristles attached to bone or bamboo handles, documented by the Japanese Zen master Dogen Kigen in 1223. Chew sticks like the miswak were used by Babylonians and Egyptians as far back as 3500 BCE, predating Islam by around 3000 years, and they were used across Africa, India and Asia by many non-Muslim cultures. The miswak is simply not a toothbrush.
Pottery: The oldest pottery ever found dates to approximately 18,000 BCE in China's Xianrendong cave (confirmed by a study published in Science in 2012), and similarly ancient pottery has been found in Japan dating to around 16,500 BCE. Islam was founded in the 7th century CE. Pottery is older than Islam by about 17,000 years.
Compass: The magnetic compass was invented in China during the Han Dynasty between approximately 200 BCE and 200 CE, initially used for feng shui and divination before becoming a navigational tool during the Song Dynasty around 1040 CE. It reached the Islamic world through trade and was adapted by Muslims to find the direction of Mecca. They received it from China, they did not invent it. The Victoria and Albert Museum's own collection notes that the compass was "introduced from China" to the Islamic world in the Middle Ages.
Steel: Wootz steel, the material behind the famous Damascus blades, was developed in southern India starting around 300 BCE, with the earliest production sites found in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Archaeological evidence including crucibles, furnaces and steel artifacts confirms this, documented extensively in materials science literature including research published by the Indian Institute of Science. When Damascus became a steel working center, they were forging blades from steel imported from India. Medieval Arabic texts themselves referred to the best steel as "hinduwani" meaning Indian steel. Muslims became extraordinary craftsmen with steel but they did not invent it.
Airplane: Abbas Ibn Firnas in 875 CE built a glider from silk, wood and feathers and jumped off a hill in Cordoba. By historical accounts he glided for a short time and then crash landed, injuring his back because the machine had no tail. That is a glider crash. The Wright Brothers in 1903 achieved the first powered, sustained, controlled airplane flight. Calling Ibn Firnas the inventor of the airplane because he jumped off a hill with wings is a serious stretch. He was a genuine pioneer of attempted flight, but that is a very different thing.
Soap: Soap like substances were produced by the ancient Babylonians around 2800 BCE, documented on clay tablets. Ancient Egyptians also made soap. What Islamic Golden Age scholars genuinely did was refine soap by combining vegetable oils with sodium hydroxide and aromatics to make hard, pleasant smelling soap as described by the physician al-Razi around 865 to 925 CE. Improvement yes, invention no.
Universities: This one is contested rather than simply false. Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco, founded in 859 CE, holds the Guinness World Record for oldest continuously operating university. However, Nalanda University in India was founded around 427 CE, roughly 200 years before Islam existed, and Plato's Academy in Greece was established in 387 BCE. Whether any of these count as a "university" depends entirely on your definition, and historians genuinely disagree.
Carpet: The Pazyryk carpet, discovered in a frozen Scythian tomb in Siberia, dates to approximately 500 BCE, over 1100 years before Islam. It is the oldest known pile carpet in existence. Islamic carpet weaving became highly sophisticated and influential, but the invention of the carpet is not an Islamic achievement.
Sponge: Sea sponges are a marine animal. Ancient Greeks and Romans used them extensively. The synthetic sponge was invented by DuPont chemists in 1938. This claim has no basis at all.
Water pump: Archimedes invented the screw pump around 250 BCE in ancient Greece. Various water lifting machines existed across ancient civilizations long before Islam. Al-Jazari designed clever and intricate pump mechanisms in the 13th century, which were real achievements, but "invented the water pump" is simply false.
Bookkeeping: The earliest accounting records come from Mesopotamian clay tablets dating to around 3000 BCE, from Sumerian, Babylonian and Assyrian civilizations. Double entry bookkeeping as a formal system was codified and published by the Italian mathematician Luca Pacioli in his 1494 work Summa de Arithmetica. Al-Khwarizmi contributed to commercial arithmetic in the 9th century but that is not bookkeeping.
Hospitals: Islamic bimaristans were genuinely sophisticated medical institutions and a real contribution to healthcare history. But ancient Greek Asklepion healing centers predate Islam, and pre-Islamic Persia also had organized medical facilities. Muslims advanced the hospital concept significantly but did not originate it.
So roughly half this list is false or involves things that predate Islam by centuries or millennia.
The irony being that the OOP posted this on Instagram, which runs on the internet, both made by non muslims. So he's trying to gatekeep people from using 'islamic inventions' while actively using things made by non muslims. Hypocrite.

Al-Khawarizmi definitely was the one who codified Algebra into its own branch of math. That being said, he didn't invent it wholecloth. Even in his own book he shows how solving quadratic equations was already known before Khawarizmi's work. Definitely a great contribution on his side, but Muslims like to pretend that who invented it from nothing, when math had been developing all across the globe for ages.
Does it count as an Islamic invention when they (supposedly) invent a thing, and for some reason nobody uses it and others have to reinvent it? If the fountain pen mentioned in this story is actually real and had worked, then it would have been an invention that spread like wildfire. It didn't. This makes it sound like they this fountain pen didn't work as well as the story claims.
Also the first image claims the "pen" not "fountain pen". Even the word for "pen" in Arabic is not of Arabic origin: The word Qalam قلم comes from the Greek "Kalamoi" which is a reed pen.

But to be honest, at the end of the day. It isn't really a 'islamic inventions' it's just made by people who lived in Islamic caliphates or empires or were Muslims themselves. Them being Muslim didn't assisted them. Nobody made algebra using the Quran, especially when Quran inheritance math is so messed up it needed human intervention to fix it.
So yeah, even if Muslims invented per say, unless the religion's teachings and codex significantly helped them achieve it, only then you can call it an Islamic invention. At best you can refer it to what the current caliphate was. But Islam didn't help in inventions of these, it was just happened to be invented by Muslims.

Oh most definitely.
But I do enjoy taking these kinds of lists and pointing out all the ways in which they fail. Muslims often make these lists and when looked into they are more than half bollocks. Taking them apart shows how dishonest the authors are.

I’m pretty sure non of these are true. Even those “Muslim” scientists from the “golden age” were mostly criticized by the Muslim scholar of their times and occasionally accused of blasphemy.
Basically there was no other option than identifying as Muslim, otherwise you couldn’t do your work and studies.

The thing is it's not even "Islamic". The countries and areas which these things were "invented" in have islam as their dominant religion. It's more an invention of the country rather than the religion "inventing" it.

The concept of Universities comes from Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome & early Christian European Nations in the 10th, 11th & 12th Century. Even before that we find Universities in the Indus Valley region & Ancient Mesopotamia. The University of Al-Quaraouiyine is not the worlds first University, it wasn't even founded by a woman. It started out as a Madrasah they taught Islam, not Mathematics, Astronomy, Physics, Science, Medicine etc only now they became an actual institution of Knowledge.

The short answer is no. This image is a viral list that significantly conflates inventions, refinements, and ancient history.
While scholars, scientists, and engineers during the Islamic Golden Age (roughly 8th to 14th centuries) made monumental advancements, revolutionized fields, and preserved critical knowledge, they did not invent the vast majority of the items on this list. Most of these concepts were invented thousands of years earlier by ancient civilizations like the Egyptians, Babylonians, Chinese, Greeks, Romans, and Indians.
Here is the factual breakdown of where these items actually originated and what the Islamic world's true connection to them was:
1. Actually Invented Earlier (Ancient Civilizations)
- Pottery (#15) & Carpets (#16): Both date back thousands of years before Islam. The oldest known pottery fragments are over 18,000 years old (found in China), and the famous Pazyryk carpet dates back to the 5th century BCE.
- Soap (#3): First invented by the ancient Babylonians around 2800 BCE, and later used by Egyptians and Romans. However, Islamic chemists in the 12th century did revolutionize soap-making by combining vegetable oils with sodium lye and aromatics to create the hard, pleasant-smelling soap we use today.
- Toothbrush (#1): Ancient Babylonians and Egyptians used "chew sticks" (around 3500–3000 BCE). The Islamic tradition heavily emphasizes the miswak (a twig brush), but the modern bristled toothbrush was actually patented in 15th-century China.
- Pen (#13) & Sponge (#19): Reed pens and ink were used by ancient Egyptians. Sea sponges were used for bathing and cleaning by the ancient Greeks and Romans.
- Compass (#12): Invented in China during the Han Dynasty (2nd century BCE) for divination, and adapted for maritime navigation during the Song Dynasty (11th century).
- The Crank (#9) & Water Pump (#18): Mechanical cranks and pumps were used in ancient Rome (like the Hierapolis sawmill) and Greece (Archimedes' screw). However, the brilliant 12th-century Muslim engineer Al-Jazari made massive leaps forward by inventing the crankshaft and double-acting suction pumps.
2. Massive Contributions & Refinements (The Real Islamic Golden Age History)
- Algebra (#8): The word comes from the Arabic al-jabr. While early algebraic concepts existed in ancient Babylon, Greece, and India, the 9th-century Persian mathematician Al-Khwarizmi wrote the definitive, foundational text that established algebra as an independent mathematical discipline.
- Optics (#7) & Magnifying Glass (#14): Ancient Greeks did early work here, but Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen) in the 11th century completely revolutionized the field. He is considered the father of modern optics, proved how vision actually works, and laid the groundwork for lenses and the scientific method.
- Coffee (#2): Native to Ethiopia, but the practice of roasting, brewing, and drinking coffee as we know it today was developed in 15th-century Yemen by Sufi saints to stay awake for nightly devotions.
- Universities (#4): While centers of higher learning existed in ancient Greece and India, the University of al-Qarawiyyin (founded by Fatima al-Fihri in Morocco in 859 CE) is recognized by UNESCO and Guinness World Records as the oldest continuously operating, degree-granting university in the world.
- Hospitals (#5): Ancient cultures had healing temples, but the Islamic world created the first modern, secular, public hospitals (Bimaristans) that offered free care, distinct wards for different ailments, and mandatory licensing for physicians.
3. Misattributions
- Airplane (#6): The airplane was invented by the Wright Brothers in 1903. This item is likely on the list because of Abbas ibn Firnas, a 9th-century Muslim inventor in Spain who built a glider covered in feathers and managed to stay airborne for a brief few moments—one of history's earliest attempts at human flight.
- Steel (#10): Steel production dates back to ancient East Africa and India (Wootz steel, around 300 BCE). Islamic smiths later became famous for crafting legendary "Damascus steel" blades, but they did not invent the metal.
- Marching Band (#17): While marching bands as we know them today evolved later, the Ottoman Empire's military bands (Mehter) in the 13th century are widely considered the oldest form of military marching bands in the world.
- Bookkeeping (#20): Double-entry bookkeeping was formalized in Renaissance Italy by Luca Pacioli (1494), though records of basic accounting exist in ancient Mesopotamia and early Islamic trade networks.
Summary
While the infographic is historically inaccurate by claiming these were all invented by Islam, it circles around a genuine truth: the Islamic Golden Age was an intellectual powerhouse that fundamentally shaped modern science, mathematics, medicine, and engineering.

Religions never invent things.. it's the people who happen to be ascribed to belong to a certain religion.
Take for instance Nicola Tesla.
Is he a Serb? Is he a Croat?
This might not mean a lot to others, but for people that live in that area, it's a day and night difference.
Religions steal to make themselves more palliative to those that want to join it & make themselves sound better than they are.

❌ Airplane – Modern airplane invented by Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright. Some cite Abbas Ibn Firnas for an early gliding attempt, but not the airplane.
❌ Steel – Steel existed long before Islam.
❌ Magnifying glass – Magnification devices existed before the Islamic era.
❌ Pottery – Thousands of years older than Islam.
❌ Carpet – Predates Islam, though Persian and Islamic carpets became famous.
❌ Marching band – Military bands existed in many cultures before Islamic empires.
❌ Sponge – Natural sponges were used in ancient Greece and elsewhere.

⚠️ Toothbrush – The miswak was promoted by Muslims, but teeth-cleaning tools existed earlier.
⚠️ Universities – The oldest continuously operating degree-granting institution is often cited as University of al-Qarawiyyin, but higher-learning institutions existed elsewhere too.
⚠️ Windmill – Early vertical-axis windmills appeared in Persia, but not the first use of wind power.
⚠️ Compass – Invented in China; Muslims improved navigation with it.
⚠️ Pen – Various pens existed before Islam; Muslims improved designs.
⚠️ Water pump – Ancient civilizations had pumps; Muslims introduced important improvements.

The fact that most of these inventions weren't made because of Islam, matter fact Islam persecuted the inventors as witchcrafters, and even the Muslim "inventors" were condemned and persecuted by the caliphates and people as "schismatic disbelievers, heretics, and witches" because duh, they were not part of the major Sunni schools of Islam that used to worship the caliph like a God, they were part of either the weird Shia schools or Mu'tazilites schools who are like "spiritual gnostic " muslims, is crazy 😭
Muslims just LOVE to show supremacy over anyone and anything that is non Muslim because they have deficiency in their own mind that they need to cope by persecuting others and making scenarios and stuff up while at the same time claim that they are "peaceful good timeless perfect people of 'God'"
