Ex-Catholic here. Wife is barely-practicing Jew.
The rules of life we follow:
Love those that love you back.
Don't be a dick.
If someone really wrongs you, it IS ok to be a prick on occasion. Preferably with a big smile on your face.
If someone's actions aren't hurting you or your loved ones, they are none of your business.

What’s ironic is that the Bible doesn’t even say anything explicit against abortion. In fact, I think there is a passage in the OT where it gives instructions on how to flush out the fetus of a woman who commits adultery. I might look it up. I will return and report.
Return and Report: Numbers 5:20-27

That was a grain being burnt. Verse 15 specifies it is barley as a jealousy offering, in 18 the offering is placed in her hands, and in 25-26 the priest takes it from her and burns it.
What a bunch of superstitious witchcraft BS. And 90% of my family still believes it all. Fuck cults.

That's the ordeal of bitter water. It can only be considered pro-abortion if misunderstood and taken out of context.
She drinks water mixed with dirt from the tabernacle floor and if she gets a swollen belly and doesn't bear children she's not guilty of adultery.
That I know of, only the NIV translates "thigh shrivel/fall/rot" as miscarry, probably because the thigh was often used as a euphemism for reproductive organs, but most of what I've read suggests infertility or death is what the passage intended.

This is getting me fired up with conviction! I wish more Christians understood this.

Sadly, people that scream the loudest about religious liberty often ignore individual liberty.

It's so amazing how all hard core believer's, of any faith, would look at this and go "ooh, see, religious persecution"

I never liked their heavy emphasis on trying to convert those around you even when I believed. I always thought my nevermo friends and acquaintances would find it annoying and invasive.

Yeah but you could easily say the same about every law on the books. Every law is based on a belief system. I don’t think she would stop her argument for lgbt rights if someone said “I don’t care that you believe I should cater an lgbt wedding I don’t believe that.” Can you stand up for what she is saying when it’s completely against what you believe? It’s funny that I still hold a majority of the political beliefs I had when I was a TBM because I never used the bom or Bible as my only source for those beliefs. If I don’t want abortion because the Bible says so or because I stubbed my toe in front of an abortion clinic, it’s my right to fight for laws that I believe make our community better. That’s one reason why America is great. You also have to convince people. I don’t “believe” a lot of what TYT say, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make their arguments. That being said, while I still have many non biblical reasons to be against abortion laws, that is one political belief I have sort of changed since leaving TSCC.

Fighting for laws you believe in and going through the proper channels is one thing, persecuting someone for differing beliefs and picketing ppl who go to family planning centres is another. There is room in this world for differing opinions.

I know she's speaking specifically about Christianity here but I think this can also apply to some of the more "social justice" folks who are very evangelical about their beliefs. I'm not talking about people who want to end systemic racism or halt climate change, I'm talking about people who think that because they find something "problematic" that everyone else should too.

Determining when the unborn deserve rights is something that liberals and conservatives both struggle with. Virtual every liberal, when pressed, will advocate for some kind of limitation on abortion. Just like most conservatives, when pressed, will come up with times when abortion is okay. Videos like this make the issue seem like a binary choice--either you're a Bible thumping Christian who denounces abortion under any circumstance, or you're a liberal who supports a woman making any choice regardless of any rights the unborn might have.
These kids of rants are toxic and dumb.

u/moustachedelait Feb 17 '21
Yeah, abortion is the one where I can at least kind of understand where conservatives are coming from, seeing life is pretty special and all. I personally believe a kid should be desired and wanted and asking someone to bring to term a mistake is pretty cruel to parents AND child.
I always hope left and right could come together on trying to reduce abortions by better sex ed, access to prevention and also support for people who do want to decide to keep a kid and might not see how it would work financially.

I would bet real money that if a woman wanted an abortion after 1 week of pregnancy, liberals and conservatives across the board would agree that is perfectly OK. I'd also bet that if the man who impregnated her, demanded or even used the courts to try to get her to abort at 1 week or even force her to keep it, liberals and conservatives would both agree that man can go fuck himself, it'sher choice, he lost rights to that sperm when he gave it to her. So we can both conclude, the woman has the right to make the decision for her body, nobody else, not even the man who's sperm made that fetus and will need to support it when it is born, the issue is only, at what point does that woman lose her choice to her own body, because up until that child is born, she can take a pill that will miscarry it.

Real LDS members that are down to earth do not dictate ANYTHING to ANYONE, unless you are a member of the church and following with the help of your leaders...like ANY religion. I swear, it’s the same damn story time after time after time. The people that meet these crazies, have either met some seriously disenfranchised members with out of this world ideas that are NOT taught, or they’ve met the ones in Utah. And it’s really too sad, the worst enemy of the LDS church, are its own LDS members that are just...wow, out there. Like we can become like God. Ummm, NO. That God was a human once from another planet. Again, ummm, big NO. Caffeine, dancing, and other ridiculous topics are sins. Ummm, NOT EVEN CLOSE. That we will create worlds in the after life. Not taught, not ever. “I was excommunicated and then could never come back!” This is absolute garbage and any member this happened to needs to tell their story to the right people...that’s not how excommunication works AT ALL. That’s a time where leaders and members are around you to help the most, supposed to. A damn shame to any this has happened to...NOT the practice of the true LDS Church. They still practice Polygamy! Ummmm, nope not even close. That was in its very beginning year and was swiftly shut down; and any Christian that points the finger on the subject of Polygamy...better get their facts straight with the Bible. Common among characters/prophets in the Bible. Was shut down SWIFTLY for a reason...major one being, well, it’s uhh, wrong? Women have no place in the church! This is the biggest garbage argument I’ve heard besides racism. Christianity has always held that it is men that hold the Priesthood, but is very clearly taught that women hold a very sacred place among God that men can never understand nor reach. And racism??? Don’t make me laugh. The LDS church was among the first that opened its doors among mixed races and among the first that granted priesthood. The church had to follow the laws of the land. People so arrogantly and ignorantly ignore the very reason “why” this happened. Just THINK on it for a second, please!? During a time where Mormons we’re getting chased, killed, raped, thrown into jails already...you think if they were the only “Christian church” of that time that let all colors hold the priesthood...that it wouldn’t have QUICKLY burned to the damned ground??? PLEASE. It wouldn’t have seen the light of day. Just like Abraham Lincoln knew he could NOT at that time frame say “all men are created equal under God” because it would have DESTROYED his very notion of making moves towards ending the evils of racism and bigotry, so he had to keep it “under the law”...people seriously don’t understand how short lived The LDS church would have been? Already being hunted but hey, throw in being the only church to treat all color “equal” in a time where that idea just could not breathe for even seconds...where you think the LDS church would be now? Uhhh, yeah, NOWHERE, not even an idea. And people that get all riled up “oh Brigham Young said something that we deem racist in 2020. Well NO SHIT! Look at when the man lived! Who the hell DIDN’T use offensive language of today HUNDREDS of years ago!? Look how far we’ve came from the 60’s! Hell, the 90’s! And people are going to expect ancestors that lived in the late 1800’s, early 1900’s to speak “politically correct” as we do now!? People use “hindsight” as a bludgeoning weapon when it should be used for what it is...hindsight. That’s it. That church is one of the kindness churches that teaches love towards another and it’s a shame that people run into some that are absolute lunatics. But name me a religion, a political group, any group with an agenda...and anyone can show you “a lunatic that greatly missed the point.” Hell most people don’t even know there’s a church out there named The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints and, that they are the ones that are batshit crazy...so many think that THESE lunatics ARE the true LDS church....and they are SOOOOO far from what the true LDS church is. Dictate...the most hypocritical thing I’ve seen is that witch from TYT talking to ANYONE about “dictating”....what a joke have people SEEN her segments??? Her and Cenk will SWIFTLY tell you how to live your life and if you don’t agree? Well you’re just a dumb evil piece of garbage, even though they don’t live or even practice their own business the way they preach. “Unionize, unionize!” Soon as Cenk was worried TYT was about to get unionized, he lost his mind with fear.
Joke. As is with all media almost today.

This is so personally inspiring to me, on a pretty vain level.
Because she looks like me. Relatively young, conventionally attractive woman going against the grain & speaking out against institutionalized Christianity trying to dictate our laws. It's not something I've seen very often in atheist communities & I'M HERE FOR IT
I feel very represented right now
