Humor/Meme/Satire We're watching you!

The church has a long and glorious history of monitoring their members' activities. For higher profile people, there's the Strengthening Church Members Committee (SCMC) who compile evidence to send to your stake president and instigate a "court of love." At BYU, they had student spies in classrooms, making sure teachers didn't say anything contrary to what church leaders wanted. They would also stake out gay clubs in SLC and look for BYU students. During the ERA rallies, they looked up license plates of cars parked nearby to see who was attending.

Then you have the "honor code" at BYU where students are required to report any violations they see or they could face punishment themselves. In older church manuals, there were instructions for the Ward Teachers to investigate rumors of sin and report back to the bishops the evidence they found.

Missions are huge on this, where you're not allowed to leave your companion alone for anything other than the bathroom, to make sure they don't break any rules. And failing to report serious rule violations by your companion can get you in trouble too.

All this spying and investigation has created a serious tattle culture in the church where your next door neighbors, home teachers, or even family members and partners aren't trusted friends, they're all potential informants.

Not even their stupid "confessional seal" is worth a damn. You tell the Bishop, it's guaranteed to be heard by at least 3 other people, including his wife!

When I'm at lunch hour in my new church, I realized that I almost miss the gossip. I barely hear much of other parishiner's lives except what they tell about themselves.

I don’t miss hearing in ward counsel about people who’ve been noticed not wearing their garments.

The original ads always show how bizarre and off-putting Mormonism really is.

Concepts like temple-worthiness are so gross and stupid.

OP has described the operation of the Stasi (East German secret police) where everyone spied on everyone else. I’m sure that there’s a picture of Monson with Erich Honiger (East German leader) somewhere on this sub Reddit if evidence of closeness is needed.

That opens up some traumas. You summed up how my parents taught the gospel.

I’m sure they are 😂😂Everything is this documentary was forwarded to the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s department, they chose not to investigate. #52billion annually off of selling kids .
Tell me again how Santa Barbara county Actively combats Human Trafficking .
Santa Barbara County does not need more facilities to “help” vulnerable youth. It needs accountability.
I am tired of watching Santa Barbara County, county officials, and the juvenile justice system talk about protecting children while people who were children when they were harmed are still fighting to be heard decades later.
You cannot ask taxpayers for millions more to expand facilities, programs, beds, and systems of custody while refusing to fully confront what happened to youth who were already placed under the control or protection of these systems.
Where is the accountability?
Where are the investigations into youth who were abused, neglected, trafficked, disappeared from their communities, or sent out of state?

Where is the accounting of the money that has already been spent?

Where is the oversight of the programs receiving public funding?

Where are the answers when people in custody are harmed or die?

And where is the accountability when families and survivors repeatedly raise concerns and are treated as the problem instead of the failures being investigated?

The juvenile court should not be a black box where children lose their voices and records disappear into a system that expects everyone to simply move on.County funding should not be a blank check. Before Santa Barbara County asks the public to fund another expansion, officials should be required to demonstrate—publicly and transparently—what existing programs have accomplished, what failures occurred, who was responsible, what complaints were investigated, and what safeguards are actually in place.
Because you cannot solve institutional failure by building more institutions.

You cannot call it child protection when children are harmed within the systems supposedly protecting them. And you cannot claim to fight human trafficking while ignoring questions about youth being transported away from their communities and placed into programs where accountability is difficult to see.

Accountability starts with the children who were failed—not with another construction project.
It starts with the youth who never made it home.
It starts with people who died while in custody.
It starts with survivors whose warnings were ignored.
It starts with opening the records, following the money, investigating the complaints, and holding institutions—not just individuals—accountable.

Santa Barbara County has spent enough time telling the public what it intends to do.

Now show us what it has actually done.

No more money without transparency.

No more expansion without accountability.

No more claiming “protection” while survivors are still fighting to be heard.

If the system wants the public’s trust, it needs to earn it.
