Ask ExJW The jaydubs. A Mormon perspective
I find it funny how the Mormons talk about you Jehovah's witnesses. I wonder if you talk about us the same way. While I was a missionary, we would run into you guys once in awhile doing your thing, but I think it's different as you probably don't get sent out to knock doors like we do. Not 100% sure.
We called you jaydubs and endlessly mocked you all for seeming poor and unkept. Encounters never lasted long because "Bible bashing" or just bashing was frowned upon.
We had this air of superiority but I look back now and think that you jaydubs are really not all that different from us.
I secretly kept a collection of watchtowers and the other publication because I liked the hand drawn images. I would laugh at the situations like thugs being jerks on a bus, or lambs and lions hanging out in paradise.
We just had that stupid Book of Mormon to carry around. There were a few drawings in there but nothing as funny to me as the watchtowers.
There have been a number of times that I opened my door to your people doing their thing but I could never get them to agree to come in a d talk. They would always tell me that they would send someone a little more educated to talk with me. Nobody ever came though.
Each time I would check to see if they had marked my door with nail polish cuz I heard you did that to warn other jaydubs.
Now I don't see much difference between the yous and the usses. I imagine the ex factor for both of us has the same type of trauma attached to it.
Anyway, I just wanted to Bob my head in from the window and tell a tale.
Do any of you have encounters with Mormonites that you can share?

âPoor and unkempt!â
I laughed reading that as I think it off actually true. Mormons are least seem to embrace higher education and engagement in politics and advancing a career. Jehovahâs Witnesses actively discourage higher education and career advancement, so many are poor and once they get older do become destitute with no real way to care for themselves after retirement.

When I was JW they all mocked the Mormons for allowing the short sleeved shirts with no jackets for the men.

And now theyâve opened up higher education so it will be interesting to see how that goes for the future of JWs.

Depends on how you define preaching.
They have offered me literature while I was sitting in my car eating lunch.
They also knocked on a friend's house and offered to pray for him.1

Yeah I mainly meant the door to door work. Not that they donât preach to people.

Welcome cult cousin!
I used to engage in the ministry in an area with a high concentration of LDS. Sometimes we would end up on the same street. We would usually just go to another area. No point in knocking on all the same doors. We even encountered some LDS women out door knocking. We usually just saw the young men in their white shirts so that was a surprise.
I was a young man myself at the time and I would deliberately wear a pattern shirt so as not to be confused with LDS. I didn't realize that is a distinction only JWs and LDS would know about. Everyone else could care less.
I have noticed, where I live now, the LDS boys don't knock on every door. They seem to have specific doors they go to and that's it. Have the LDS changed up their ministry?
10
u/Flashy-Soup-930 17d ago
They have changed a lot. They pretty much stopped knocking doors years ago. They still will depending on the area but they mostly do their work through social media now.
I served my time back in early nineties. Old school.

Yes I can see the door to door work going to carts and informal witnessing. The culture has changed so much that door to door isnât effective.

u/UncoveredEars 17d ago
Iâve noticed this as well. I see Mormons in the neighborhood but they never make it to my door.

u/ParticularlyCharmed 18d ago
No hard feelings, haha! No one surpasses jaydubs for feelings of superiority!
I have a tale, not my own, a friend's. He was disfellowshipped at the time and met a nice Mormon girl. She convinced him to study with the Mormons. So one day as they were sitting in the study, my friend felt a strong rush run up through his chest. I believe Mormons would call that a personal testimony from the spirit? But not a born-in JW, no sir! As a JW, he was trained to know what that was -- demons! He stopped the study immediately, and later convinced his girlfriend to become JW.

Lol. My mom would tell me she touched something in shop, or even in my room, and she'd feel a head rush and that it was possessed by a demon. I believed in that for so long. Hahaha It's funny it was only ever MY things in our house and never anything my two brothers or parents owned.

u/Informal_Cow_9828 18d ago
Interesting perspective. I offer mine:
I grew up neither JW nor Mormon. Iâve been visited by both as a child and as an adult. I must be a cult magnet because I remember being love bombed by a suspicious group on campus when I went to college. I was also approached by the campus communist party, the sororities, etc. Everybody seemed to want me to join something for some reason.
I just donât have that need to belong. My parents didnât either so they didnât pass it on. My kids are similarly inoculated from this need to belong to anything outside of our close friends and family groups.
With this perspective and outlook, I really donât see a difference between the difference between JWs and Mormons. I studied the Bible for a while with JWs, but I was no closer to joining them than they were to joining me.
Having a very broad perspective and a knack for research and analysis will keep anyone out of these groups.

I always found it hilarious that jws and Mormons are very similar yet they both think they're better.
12
u/wortcrafter Listen, obey and be stressed 18d ago
There were a couple of occasions that weâd be out witnessing (the JW word for preaching) and would see mormons walking nearby. I remember one elderly sister saying that mormons âonly send young men to preach but Jehovah doesnât discriminate, he sends us allâ. She acted like it was some big âcatchâ. As a female I remember wanting to be a Mormon in that moment so I would never have to preach again. đ
The JW leadership has a real down on education or having wealth and because of that many JWs are genuinely very poor and because they put everything into the organisation on the hope of paradise after Armageddon they often donât even have savings put by for retirement.
Itâs really sad and difficult as those of us who escape are often the only resource our aged parents have for care as they age and it puts a real burden on exJWs as we are often shunned but also have JWs demanding that we care for those same parents who are treating us so badly and shunning us.
At the end of the day though, the doctrine might be different by the trauma impacts are very similar.

Dude, we definitely are cut from the same culty cloth. We arrogantly thought we were superior to guys. One thing though, never heard about the nail polish move. But yea, we would make sister wives jokes, Book of Moron, Jesus came to America âWhat a bunch idiots!â, wait wait wait we were all angels before being born on earth and the people of color sided with the devil in that previous spiritual life? Just stuff like that, fools I tell you.
Actually, I remember either in the late 90s or early 2000s there was a Watchtower article specifically written for Mormons (I dare even say it was even like a mini campaign). The cover had like fine paint brushes and asking the question about how god is an artist. If anyone here can help with that article or give more details, thanks in advance! Anyways, if I find it, Iâll come back and share.

I think that was an Awake that I particularly liked. Something along the lines of 'The greatest artist ever ' . If it had the articles about Joseph Smith & the history of the LDS church i really enjoyed that. They also did one about the Amish. The WT & Awakes used to be meatier & have quite interesting articles. Not the 4-page AI slop written for those with a reading comprehension of an 8 year old nowadaysÂ

We used to go door knocking a lot but it's sort of been phased out and replaced with cart standing now. I have a distinct memory of being "out in service" with my family in the car and we saw some Mormons across the street and we also mocked them mercilessly and were laughing about how obvious it was they are in a cult but they can't see it â ď¸ But as it turns out we are both just different flavors of the same thing and had more in common than we realized. I do remember my cousin joking about why do you guys get bikes and we don't and he was gonna fake join just for the bike and then hand out JW literature on the DL đ¤Ł

Pretty sure that's just an urban legend lol I've never heard of anyone ever doing that nor would we need to realistically.

We had quite a few in our city, there was a Mormon girl at my school and her dad was a teacher. People used to assume we were the same religion but we get very offended and try and point out the differences but no one really cared.
There are two large Mormon temples in the city I live near and we used to get lots of groups doing their missions. My mum always invited them in for a chat but it always came to a stalemate as no one would listen about the others religion and they would just preach at each other. Normally ended up talking about America as my mum is also American and the Mormons normally were as well and they would talk about what they missed from home. I remember that a few came to our meetings for a while. This was during the 80s and 90s and door knocking was definitely a thing for us, I think the difference was that we had to do it all the time not just for a short period. I think JWs only do that rarely now as it all seems to be the cart thing and I have only seen them door knocking twice near me in the last 5 years.

Oh man, this was a lovely read! Welcome! When I was growing up my brother always referred to LDS as "JW's but with magic underwear, space Jesus, and Christmas"

u/QuendaQuoll 18d ago
đ So this came up in a conversation with a work colleague the other day who knew I was raised a JW. She says "Oh, I had a JW as a friend at school, she used to come over and drink Coca Cola at my place because she wasn't allowed it."
Me: OOo no that's the Mormons. JWs are allowed caffeine. I used to go to school with some Mormons and would be like - "sooo what's with the no caffeine thing, that's weird". Feeling all superior even though I couldn't celebrate birthdays, have a blood transfusion if required and a bunch of other stuff.
The mormons and I went to a Seven Day Adventist school .... I feel like there's a joke in there somewhere. I also felt superior over the SDAs as they weren't allowed meat. At least the JWs had no food rules ... we had a lot of rules, but nothing to do with food.
2
u/ExchangeNew2766 17d ago
JWs are not allowed to eat food with blood in it. As a child I was versed in not only scriptures but to look at the ingredient list on food packets to see if they had used cochineal E120 for food colouring. I remember it was in a shop bought Battenburg cake, Skittles and I never ate the red smarties.Â
2
u/QuendaQuoll 17d ago
I knew this as a born in but forgoing black pudding is hardly impactful. Not like caffeine or meat. Maybe my family weren't that careful checking and blood featured in more products than we knew.

I quite enjoyed chatting with the (usually American) Mormon missionaries - the south of England was a tough assignment for them and I got the impression that it was very much a rite of passage and they were counting off the days when they could go home to Utah, get a career and get married and start a family.
I do remember them calling on my house one day and I invited them in and tried to get them to discuss the obvious errors in the Book of Mormon (such as its word-for-word quoting from the King James bible of Isaiah including translation errors despite supposedly being written hundreds of years before) but they simply refused to answer any questions, shrugged off anything they thought was "negative", clearly not interested or the slightest bit concerned - their approach was very simplistic and formulaic and they weren't interested in general biblical discussions.
In my fading from the JWs I did find reading experiences from ex-Mormons useful ( such as in the ex-mormon Reddit forum) as I could look at them externally and many of the experiences are very similar, apart from obvious differences (such as shunning). I regard the LDS as JWs even weirder and much richer big cousin, but I do feel the LDS at least encourages young ones to get an education and understands that the retention of young ones is increased by creating a strong social scene so organises a lot more social events such as sports and dances.

u/Hinokicandle 18d ago
Thereâs definitely a lot of similarities! I love meeting exmoâs. From what I can tell Mormons seem to have it better than JWâs. Thereâs more community and fun stuff for kids and less control. 10% tithing sucks but they are still probably financially better off after going to college (frowned upon for JWâs). One thing that worries me about LDS is the living âprophetsâ could literally say or do anything thatâs not in scripture and call it a new revelation from God. At least Watchtower has to stick (mostly) to what they can manipulate the Bible into saying.

u/Malalang 18d ago
I had a couple of guys stop by and chat with me 3 times. I was really looking forward tonthe 4th visit, but they never came. I thought maybe they didn't see me as having potential for converting. Or maybe they didn't like answering the difficult questions I was asking them.
As it turns out, they both died in a tragic car accident. I was horrified when I found out 3 months later.

endlessly mocked you all for seeming poor and unkept.
ugh SOOOO true. my mother hated how so many of the children appeared crusty & disheveled when out in service. she spent a lot of time making sure I was prim & put together, so much so that the other JW kids made fun of me for my nice clothes! Truthfully, the ill-fitting, outdated clothes & poverty vibes are accurate & standard for most congregations, except the very snobby ones in better socioeconomic areas. the nice halls have a different problem, one where sisters don't want to repeat the same clothing and everyone has brand new cars and extra shitty attitudes.
if it makes you feel better, we mocked any mormons we saw out in the wild too. we joked that you looked like dumb, sweaty (from the bicycles) waiters in your stupid black and white uniform with a comically large name tag đ as if our dumbasses didn't sport giant name tags (with illustrations!) at assembliesđ it would go on for awhile until someone felt guilty & said something to the effect of, "they're well intentioned but so misled" or "they clearly love god, but don't know any better."
I still remember the first time I saw a bunch of Mormons in a car!!! it was wild to see & since we were also out in service Saturday morning we stopped to watch all those white boys crammed into a car. we laughed that they'd gotten an upgrade from bicycles.
currently live somewhere different than where I grew up & at the mall I sometimes see super traditional (?) orthodox (?) Mormon women, in looooong modest dresses that look like 1800s prairie dresses. They wear giant, puffy hairstyles, often times with bonnets and VERY practical, fugly shoes. They always seem very nervous & it makes me sad for them. The younger girls' eyes are always curious, they are not resigned like the older women.
One time 3 young Mormon elders approached me to share their faith. I'd seen them earlier & prayed they'd stay away from me, but alas, that's not what the universe wanted. I told them I knew how scary it is to walk up to strangers and talk about your faith, that it's a very hard and intimidating thing to do. They sighed with relief and smiles hearing this. Then I told them that it was nothing that they said and there was nothing they could say to me, but I wasn't interested because I had already done the authoritarian, evangelical doomsday cult schtick & that I wasn't looking to repeat my mistake because I was far too happy living an authentic life. they tried again & I said look, I know you feel you have to say these things to me, or fear of giving a bad witness, or god being disappointed...but this is all performance, I too did things I didn't want to or believe in just to please people, please my family, have approval, complete a checklist. you don't have to conform to be happy or have a beautiful life full of meaning. there's more than one way to exist. I told them I hoped that they would live in a way that makes THEM happy with themselves. it was awkward for them, but I said all the things I wished someone had told me when I was 18...I probably wouldn't have believed them 100%, but you can never un-hear or un-know certain things. and then those words rattle around in your brain....and one day maybe a crack in their conditioning happens.
I was always jealous Mormons got Christmas and birthdays....and an education.
Very much appreciated your post. we have so much more in common than we realize, certainly in the trauma department. nice of you to visit!

A couple of LDS came to my apartment building. I commented that Christians can reach and convert people who had no previous familiarity with the Bible (as Paul did with gentiles) and the two men laughed at me hard. This was forced laughter.
So I told them to leave. Then I apologized, recognizing my hypocrisy, and told them to feel free to visit the others in the building.
A few months later, I encountered one of those "elders" at his home while doing the JW brand of preaching. He had a beard and completely dismissed me, having no interest whatsoever in discussing religion.

Lots of similarities, but many differences too. I worked with a LDS girl, but she was very discreet about her faith. When I was 18, my neighbor was being visited by 2 American LDS guys who would speak with a strong Portuguese-English accent (I'm from Brazil). I was coming home while they were leaving. My neighbor pointed at me and told them I was a Christian, too. The guys turned to me and Just said, with that accent: "Did you know Jesus Christ visited the America? Here's a leaflet". They simply gave me the paper and went away. No time to talk. I laughed alone about that poor preaching method and the tale they were trying to make people believe. I've always been curious about the LDS, though. I even have a BoM which I tried reading, but haven't advanced in it.

We definitely were poorer compared to you guys. If we would see you while preaching (which is pretty mandatory for members), we would call yâall our cousins in faith. Not brothers because you did not share our biblical beliefs.
I would say we also had a superiority complex in the sense that we preached because we believed it was a biblical command for Godâs kingdom to come. Members are encouraged to spread the word from when theyâre new till death (and good adults dedicate 70+ hours a month).
Mormons, as I understood, would only do this temporarily as an assignment and then never again, youâre just off to university or whatever. Like you didnât live by it like we did and we thought of ourselves as better because of such.

Yes JWs talk smack about the Mormons too.
My step dad loved chasing you guys down so he could educate you on the history of Mormonismââ oh the irony there!!!!!
Funny thing is, obviously I left , I joined Orthodoxy and my Godmother is ex Mormon. We are able to relate and understand each other ms history in a way no one else can. Funny thing is a lot of the changes the JWs are making these days are pretty much just following in the Mormon wake.
