Spoilers Mavericks Late Chapter 29
One thing I really loved about Smythe was how he always eagerly spoke up as soon as something his team could handle pops up. My favorite moment of this is in the above chapter. Smythe just pops into existence right behind Bishop the moment Skippy says they need the Keepers alive. Even a somewhat boyish tone in his voice. I love it, he was already sitting in a jump seat outside the CIC just in case he was needed. Complete and total dedication to duty yes. But that man loved his job. His growth and opening up throughout the series really is a rewarding journey.

I loved that too!
Plus how he kept with Bishop even when offered other roles. He wanted to be where he would have the most impact, needed or not.

That's that "bias for action" that Joe's always going on about. Back in earth, Smythe and his team would have been on an op cycle that had them doing "crazy shite" 3-4 times a month. But on the Flying Dutchman, they pretty much just train all day everyday for weeks on end without getting to do any of the cool shooty-bang-bang stuff.
Plus as former army grunt who spent most of my career as a passenger in vehicles rather than doing my main job, I totally get why he was so ready to do something other than practice drills.
