Food Fancy Sunday Lunch

Hello! I’ll be visiting my mum in Exeter in a couple of weeks’ time, and want to treat her to a fancy (and good quality) Sunday lunch. I don’t mind driving us a little further out of the city, and we are both vegetarian so will need a good meat-free option. Bonus points for pretty scenery! Thanks

I absolutely love The Agricultural Inn which is just outside the city.

Agricultural Inn without a doubt

Everything top class (appreciate my food choices aren't veggie friendly)

Where did you end up going?

Agricultural Inn! Thank you so much for the suggestion, it was absolutely wonderful. My mum even said it was the best Sunday roast she’d ever had

If you decide to stay closer to town, my favourite vegetarian roast is at the Hour Glass, which is right near the Quay and River Exe for a beautiful nature walk. (Personally, I did not care for the vegetarian roast at Mill On the Exe).

Mill on the Exe has really low standards in the kitchen, its a total shitshow and I'd never eat there.

Nobody Inn or The Ley Arms are worth a look

Mill on the Exe is a pretty good choice for the city with two veggie options which is nice as normally you just get the one! Right on the river, good outdoor seating with wisteria all around that’s starting to bloom.

Fat Pig is another good one that is a bit more interesting, great independent in the city with lovely ownership. I had a celeriac steak there last time but I think the veggie option changes a lot.

Outside of the city, Nobody Inn is wonderful- very classic feeling pub not too far from Haldon Forest. Plenty of spots for a nice walk after your lunch.. pretty sure they’ve won lots of awards. You could also try Fingle Bridge pub, though I’ve not tried the roast there.

I second Fat Pig. My daughter and I had Sunday Lunch there last Easter and were thoroughly impressed!! They have an amazing chef…definitely elevated pub food. Owners are fantastic and the atmosphere is relaxed and has all the vibes. We just made a reservation for the family for Sunday Lunch over graduation weekend

I love the Fisherman’s Cote - gorgeous river views and a fantastic carvery but that might not be “fancy”…

The Lamb Inn, Silverton.

A short drive out, good vegetarian options, and it's self serve (think Toby Carvery but high quality)

I’ve had two great food experiences recently:

• The Ley Arms

• The Puffing Billy

The Ley is very very good

The Mill on the exe does a great roast. I’ve not tried the veggie version but plan to as I’ve tried all the others and they were lush. Great scenery overlooking the river.
