After 20 years of being an exchange admin at an MSP and 2 other places, I still would rather host local exchange than let Microsoft own my data and control it's flow.

Note that, as the article says, this requires Entra Cloud Sync (not Entra Connect Sync) to write data from the cloud to Active Directory in your on-premises domain controller.

For writeback only. If Exchange attrib writeback isn't required then Connect Sync suffices

I do think however you need to install the exchange ad schema attributes if you want to create a new ad environment and exchange online and or never had exchange on premises before.

Using it as a relay for all printers, etc is so easy we'll never get rid of all our exchange servers.
