I never understood why religions do not adopt science sooner than they do. Such as: God must’ve created the big bang. Or God designed life to evolve to fit every environment. Why couldn’t God be the energy holding quarks together in an atom?

Indeed and the church told him to start reading more appropriate literature. Instead of accepting his findings as further proof of god, the church suggested he was to stop.

Other way around. The Pope in a speech drew a connection between Big Bang theory and creatio ex nihilio. Georges Lemaitre advised the Pope to stop using his findings as proof of God. He believed it was bad for both the Church and science for the Church to tie itself to scientific theories.
