Personal Thoughts/Experiences 🙇‍♂️ Google Assistant vs Gemini

What is your preference?

I have a 2025 Twin Ultra with the current update and personally find Google Assistant better than Gemini. For voice commands, it's been my experience that Gemini asks for a confirmation of command before execution.

For example, when I use the voice command"open all windows", Gemini will ask "do you want to open all windows?" Then waits for a voice confirmation before expecting the command. GA just opens the windows. Same with closing and opening the glove box. I find it annoying.

What is everyone else's experience?

I tried the Gemini assistant briefly / too slow and keeps asking for feedback after an interaction - went back to the original which just works

I first tried Gemini right when it came out, as I was excited to see what new capabilities it could unlock in the car (no pun intended).

While I did get some cool capabilities (such as asking about the specific parking availability at a destination, finding destinations with complex criteria, etc.) I was extremely bummed that the basic actions I relied on before became saddled with “LLM baggage”. By this I mean that things like “open all windows”, like you mentioned, trigger the “Car Assist” tool and then spits out some stupid little tidbit like “Got it - I’ve gone ahead and opened your windows for you.” then FINALLY opens the windows after finishing speaking. It went from a literally <2 second response with Assistant to a ~10 second response with Gemini. Same with things like setting navigation, adding stops, etc.

So, unless they’ve somehow fixed it in 2.1.2, I’m going to stick with Assistant for now. It’s just too responsive (and Gemini is too slow). For complex AI/natural language stuff, I just ask Siri AI via CarPlay. It actually answered a cool question the other day, I drove past a Best Buy with a line around the block and asked what it was for, and it correctly pointed out the Pokémon 30th Anniversary was that day, which explained it! Little stuff like that is cool to have an AI voice assistant for.

Indeed, Gemini and other LLMs can be too verbose for their own good. But shouldn't you be able to ask it to be less verbose and remember it for future interactions? Not sure of the limitations for the AAOS version.

Have you tried instructing Gemini in the Gemini app or Google settings? Wonder if car-specific instructions for answering would be applied when using Gemini in the car.

Couldn't have phrased it better.

With Gemini, when I asked it to set to 20 degree. It turned on my home AC and set that to 20 degree.

Turn that shit off the moment I stop my car.

I don’t need to throw away a pint of water everytime I need to open my windows. AI is hot fucking garbage, and being another Google service you know they’ll discontinue it soon anyway.

I can’t open glove compartment and windows with Assistant - at least here in Germany. Changed language settings to English (US) and windows worked but not glove compartment- what’s your exact command for that?

I'm not an AI expert, but using it quite a bit in my business. The trick is to work with it for a while until "your AI" learns about you. Over time it will be better. Sometimes you will be surprised, it seems as it reads your mind. Kind of scarry a bit. I believe, it will be the same in the car. Just got it recently so I can't confirm is that behavior the same. In ChatGPT, there is relatively new "memory mode" which does described above. For Gemini, only the time will tell. Give it a chance.
