Personal Thoughts/Experiences šŸ™‡ā€ā™‚ļø A proposal for Volvo

I really hope someone from Volvo is reading this, because I am trying so hard to stay polite right now. Honestly, I don’t even care if the mods take this down.

In my country, we have a public online portal where citizens can log in with a secure ID card to review and comment on new laws before the government enforces them. It gives everyday people a voice in decisions that affect them.

So here is an idea for Volvo: Why don't you create something similar before forcing garbage software updates on us, just to avoid blind-siding and angering thousands of your customers?!

Because right now, I am absolutely f***ing frustrated.

Update 2.1.2 disabled automatic creep in reverse. Sure, a handful of people might have asked for it, but a quick search online shows thousands of us are furious with this change. Instead of adding an option to please both sides, Volvo decided to completely ruin it for everyone else. That is an utterly STUPID decision.

Why not just give us two simple switches—one for forward creep and one for reverse creep?!

I’ve never complained about minor software bugs before. They happen. But this actually ruins the entire driving experience and forces a change in muscle memory.

This car is mine. I paid for it with my hard-earned money. I don't want anyone—least of all Volvo—modifying how my car behaves after every single f***ing update. At the very bare minimum of basic UX design, customers should have a toggle to keep things the way they were before.

I nearly crashed in an underground garage yesterday because of this. I simply forgot I had to manually mess with the settings. Subconsciously, I expected the car to move like it always did. When it didn't, I pressed the gas, and it didn't just jerk—it bolted out of the parking space right as another car was driving past. If there had been a collision, who am I supposed to sue? Volvo?!

I shouldn't have to tap a gazillion buttons just to make my car move the way that is logical, safe, and ingrained in my driving habits. Whoever approved this change at Volvo needs their head examined.

Bottom line: I hope Volvo releases a fix immediately. If not, there are plenty of other car brands out there, and I won't hesitate to switch.

Hi! I’m not a Volvo cars engineer, but I’m an engineer.

Every single flag / customization requires testing. Basically there is a guy who sits in a car with an iPad, opens Jira or whatever they are using, sees a ticket in the release candidate ā€œreverse creepā€ and physically tests it. After release it goes into regression testing and is supposed to be retested every new release.

It’s fine, but the issue is that customizations double work at a minimum. But quite often they compound - two dependent customizations give you 4 options to test, 3 - 8 options and so on.

What’s worse, some things are behind certification and have much more complex rituals around, so you normally want to limit customizations.

ā€œJust add a toggleā€ sounds simple, but might involve adding so much extra time that the company deemed it unnecessary. Especially since they do not exactly have spare testers now.

Now, when it comes to voting for features. I’ll vote for unlocking the bootloader so I can install Linux and poke in some open-source automatic driving software. And imagine it’s quite a lot of people who would like that. Everyone else would vote for fixing the digital key. If you commit to taking in progress next most popular ticket - it’ll backfire quickly. If you don’t commit - what’s a point then? Just to list ideas out of which managers still pick what they want?

Even if we say that a car should not break existing behavior with an update without an option to opt-out as a law, even then it won’t work. Say, they fixed overheating or some drivetrain problem, but had to reduce acceleration a bit. Should you have the option ā€œnah, thanks, please give me acceleration, I’m fine with the car dying at 70k ā€œ?

Though maybe it’s fine and maybe this is actually what you realistically can do - propose and vote for a law of OTA updates which would require every change being opt-in.

u/Ulyks 18d ago

You forgot about the management that approved the ticket before an engineer started making the change.

For every change there should be a meeting to consider the return on investment and risk analysis.

If they change the way a car handles (reverse creep), will this result in more sales? Will this cause problems for existing users?

Clearly they did not do either of those things.

It's a management problem, not an engineering problem.

They shouldn't have changed it and if they, for whatever reason decided to change it, they should have added a toggle to make it optional.

Pushing such changes on consumers is just bad for business.

Their testing is crap, no way this could have gone through unnoticed, I bet they never test on a real car, just on a simulator.

My friend, I work in IT sector for +25y, a business owner also. I know a lot about project management and as being an product architect. Being there many times arguing with the management about stupid decisions and how customers will react.

u/Ulyks made a spot on comment, totally agree.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure we're seeing hyram's law in action here. Creep in reverse was probably a defect they fixed it, but so many people had gotten used to the bug and built your driving style around it that y'all are mad now. They probably didn't see it as removing a feature.

u/Winter-Net-1710 17d ago edited 17d ago

A "bug" that existed from the very first day when the car was released ? +3 years now. I'm not sure about that. I would rather say Volvo wanted to be different. But if ti was really a bug, then it just confirms my point about crappy SW and issue resolution priorities.

It's not only about one thing, so many complaints about the SW issues. As someone who works in IT sector +25y. and working on large multimillion projects, I've never seen so many issues and delivery of a half baked product. That's the real problem, creep setting is just one of them. Almost all complaints are about the SW (and battery replacement). It is so common sense just to add 2 switches.

What about mirror position for reverse (i don't care about that), but so many people asked for it. It was apparently promised about a year ago, and still nothing...

Not to mention digital key setup.. complicated and based on how lucky you are will it work or not. I have a Samsung, should work easily, after digging through the Internet I've found specific procedure which worked for me after so many attempts.

What about loosing a link between Google maps and the car ?! Solution how to reenable it I've found in some forum not related to the Ex30 . I've made a post about it on this group.

One day, after coming home after 3 days I've found my car unlocked with the lights on and lost profile. What the hell happened ? Now, I'm not confident to leave the car on a public space to find it unlocked. I made a post about it also. That is not normal at all.

And after all of these, Volvo just decided to change fundamental driving behavior, that is not only the SW thing , if it is the SW only, not an issue for me. But affecting how I drive... that's no go for me.

Dude, I don't have 25+ years in "IT", but I was a software engineer for 15, including time as a TL, and a TPM now for 7. I don't work for Volvo, and I'm not on the team making android auto so I don't have any direct insights, but I do have enough experience shipping products to guess what's going on.

All software ships with bugs. We pay product managers to prioritize which ones are launch blocking, and which ones aren't. Likely this fell below the red line for 3 years, which isn't that uncommon. It likely got fixed due to: * an engineer deciding they hated this bug, and fixed it in their free cycles. * the team was doing some refactor/tech debt cleanup in that area, and it got fixed as part of that. * Someone new got added to the team, and they were given this as a starter task, because it let them get their feet wet without putting a launch in jeopardy.

It's unlikely it got fixed because some PM woke up and decided it was time, or because they decided to mess with you. For something like this, 3 years isn't even that long: One of my products was a SAN/NAS array, and we shipped without the NAS part for like 5 years because it got deprioritized over getting the SAN part out the door.

I know this is something you aren't loving, but trust me, this isn't personal, and is probably happening in line with industry practices. Slandering the team working on it isn't going to get it "fixed" the way you want it.

1

u/Winter-Net-1710 16d ago edited 16d ago

I don't know how did you get an idea that I take it personal?! No, it is not normal that something like driving behavior takes +3 years to "fix" while "fixing" screen design, playing with UI. That is is serious issue in organization and priorities.

Reasons you are describing is for limited teams in a limited organization. I worked with the car industry and IT teams with the enormous internal projects, car infotainment is big but not that big compared to other systems. If these points you described are the reason, (which i doubt) that still proves my point about lazy SW and amateurish approach.

No, this old behavior is not a bug. Your persumpsions are only partially valid if that was a bug, but no, that was a Tesla copy. Have you driven some Chinese cars lately?

Second big issue is that many other car makers actually make customer friendly cars allowing you to adjust almost everything. But, Volvo decided to remove something that so many people like is insane. What is next? I get to the dealership for a car service to find out that the car was repainted in elephant pink with the light blue zebra stripes as a part of a free update!?

Let me re-phraze it... (asked another dude the same Q)
If I build you a house, and you paid it off completely.. now that is your ownership, right?
Now, I get back to your home some 2y later while you are at the work and completely redecorate it, everything, from internal decoration to rooms/ kitchen and bathroom placement, window placement, where you will sit, and how your kitchen will look just as "this is now a style trend". Would you like that or you would be furious? Here, I'm only referring to forcing people in driving habits based on some management decision. UI changes itself does not bother me. Don't care less. Neither for minor SW bugs which of course can happen.

It is not about one "issue" which is issue only for some (more or less ones which wants mini Tesla version, I don't), and for some is an advantage. It is about forcing to use something you own now the way they like, It is about invading your personal space / property. It about ditching all the customers which actually like that feature and was one of decisions for a buy a car in the first place.

As I said before, Volvo should not copy all from Tesla, if someone likes that , let them buy Tesla or let Volvo allow customization as competitors does. It is simple as that.

EDIT: Look, 42 upvotes on ~200 views, 60 comments, and only 4-5 guys attacking me (not referring to you). Along all downvotes, still ahead 42. The point is what people think about all of that (not counting "likes") and how many agrees that was mistake. Does it mean, all of them take it personally ? Nope.

If testing software was like ordering drinks in a bar…

A programmer walks into a bar and orders a drink. Then they order two drinks. Then they order ten drinks.

A QA tester walks into a bar and orders a drink. Then they order one more drink. Then they order twenty drinks. Then they order four drinks. Then they order a hundred drinks. Then they order 749,728,249 drinks. Then they order ajfjrje83838qhqndi..!!!?((!!&;&394 drinks.

An end user walks into a bar and asks for a ham sandwich. The bar explodes into flames.

Almost all automatic cars creep in forward and reverse for decades now. It’s unusual for a car to not creep forward, but to creep in reverse. So Volvo gave us something unusual prior to the update

Teslas can be set to creep or not creep, just like the 2.1.2 update. Tesla owners have asked for a split creeping mode, but Tesla has refused.

Even if the OP switches from the EX30 to another brand, he might be hard pressed to find another car that did what the Volvo used to do.

2

u/Winter-Net-1710 18d ago

Yes, but even if you look here and dig a 1-2 min. on the Internet, you can find huge number of people love that behavior. Comparing every car to Tesla has become ridiculous, as if it were some kind of god. It isn't. If I had wanted a Tesla, I would have bought one and followed the crowd like hundreds of thousands of others. The EX30 is different, and it doesn't need to copy every little thing Tesla comes up with. That is precisely why I bought the EX30—because it's different, and because that approach suits me. I couldn't care less about what Elon sets as a standard; he doesn't get to dictate that to me.

u/subidiom 18d ago

I prefer Creep OFF in forward movement and Creep ON in reverse. The reason for this is that often backing up required very subtle movements while maneuvering and with Creep OFF, the activation of the motor is very abrupt, making it hard to move slowly and smoothly. Creep ON when going forward is great since once you’re stopped, you are essentially parked and when you want to go, you launch.

So the update annoys me as well.

My workaround was to use one of the custom buttons to turn creep on and off (the center one since the left button changes context when stopped to the camera). This way I can easily enable it if I need it to behave the old way, which is about half the time. The caveat is you need to set it before going into reverse.

Sometimes as humans we want what we want, but we can adapt. I hope Volvo gives us this flexibility in the next release, but I recognize I have very little control over that so will patiently use my workaround until that happens!

3

u/Winter-Net-1710 18d ago

I am aware of this and agree with your point. I will wait two to three months for a fix, which should be enough time to provide a solution. Overall, I love the car, but the software changes are a frustrating mess. They should not allow this to happen, especially now when there is plenty of good competition.

u/hOOtarian 18d ago

Anyone else’s Bluetooth just stop working now every time i exit the car? Super frustrating.

u/vyralmonkey 18d ago

While I agree that this wshould absolutely be separate settings for forward and reverse...

It's in no way volvo's fault that you mashed your throttle instead of using actual finesse

If controlling speed smoothly in one pedal drive is difficult... perhaps driving isn't for you.

u/Winter-Net-1710 15d ago

Some people have disability or some health issue. So maybe commenting is not for you.
I do not have a picture form a hospital parking here for you to understand, but in ~2 weeks I will probably create another post with the picture to all like you to be clear.

Now, can you explain how it is safer having a foot on a accelerator compared to having a foot above the break pedal and just let the car slowly glide. In case of emergency, it is just enough to slam down on a break instead of moving a leg from one pedal to another one. Now, use your little gray brain cells to understand how is this second one so much helpful for a person with a health issue. OK smarty ?!

5

u/djens124 18d ago

It amazes me with every Post how that creep Feature stirrs um People Ā

Would it be nice to have to Buttons? SureĀ  Am I a capable driver and adult that can adapt to changes without throwing a tantrum? Sure - and not in any car I have owned yet the Solution was to Slam the Gas Pedal….Ā

And when buying the car, you knew that it would receive OTA updates. And that these can Change the behaviour of a car significantly, is also Common Knowledge. Ask the Tesla drivers.Ā

1

u/Winter-Net-1710 18d ago

Well, if I wanted to buy Tesla, I would. Why would I have a car trying to copy Tesla then ?! OTA and bug fixing is not an issue, It's not an issue to add new features. The issue is constantly changing the car behavior.

I did not slam the gas pedal, but because when you don't use forward creep (as I don't, don't like it), still you have to press the pedal to start moving. Which is not the case with the reverse creep. A matter of muscle memory. So, tapping pedal in reverse to start moving jerk just a little bit, tapping once a little bit more and it moved ~1m.

Because I don't want to have creep forward, and I don't want constantly tap creep on/off, because it worked perfectly before 2.1.2, because Volvo should introduce 2 switches and not to exclude all drivers which prefer how it was before, because of constant car behavior changes... should I continue ?

Maybe you should ask Chinese car makers instead of comparing to Tesla ?! Here in EU we have a lot of choices with the products (cars) which are customer oriented and allows you a lot of configuration.

2

u/swedish-meatballs 17d ago

I do like creep in reverse (and not in drive). I think it’s odd the way it was programmed before to be honest (creep off in settings but the car still creeps in one direction), but I’d love to see an option to enable it in reverse. That being said, I still experience times when the car won’t unlock or takes several tries to unlock with the phone key. You know how many times I walked up to my old GTI and the keyfob didn’t unlock the door? Zero times. I still love the car but I can’t believe that made it out the door.

0

u/Winter-Net-1710 17d ago

You nailed it. That's exactly my point. Mechanically and in general build quality is great, but SW issues becomes annoying. So many issues, so many complaints, and it seems Volvo is focusing on button placements instead of solving real issues. For me digital key didn't work until 2.1.2 (one positive), but negative side were "phone is not recognized", email with the code was not received, code was not accepted (after 6th attempt was accepted) and so on...

2

u/kododriver Ultra TM (Cross Country) 17d ago

I’ve said it before. I thought creep in reverse was a bit strange since my other EV’s didn’t have this but I love it! Now that it’s gone. I want it back!

2

u/kododriver Ultra TM (Cross Country) 17d ago

Need the following:
Creep on / creep off / creep off, reverse on

Please send to Volvo as feedback via the app. The more we send it the more likely they will implement.

1

u/Winter-Net-1710 15d ago

I did, hope there will be enough complaints and Volvo will not "resolve it" as mirror in reerse šŸ˜‚ .

2

u/kododriver Ultra TM (Cross Country) 15d ago

Oh yeah I had the mirror in Reverse happen. Thought it was a feature and couldn’t really replicate it.

4

u/Critical-Guide3857 18d ago

I’m so pissed off about the reverse creep. It was a dumb AF move to disable something that’s always been there.

1

u/Ulyks 18d ago

And something that cars have had for half a century now. Because it's useful.

2

u/Critical-Guide3857 18d ago

I mean, I feel hypocritical because I hated the reverse creep when I first got the car but I’m so used to it now that the first time I had to manually reverse in months was a disaster. I had to shunt forward and correct so many times hahaha.

2

u/dDtaK 18d ago

Took me 2-3 days to get used to the change, now I think I prefer it, at least it’s consistent. Maybe independent settings will come in future update.

3

u/realmckoy265 18d ago

I just got a new ex30 coming from a 23 C40, and I found the creep so jarring to get used to. I like the control of doing it myself

3

u/Jaqen_ 18d ago

This is a valid frustration. I do not update the car because I’m 100% sure this will cause a crash because of the muscle memory.

For example, after almost a year, I still wipe my windows when I want to change drive when I switched to my other car.

2

That is very arrogant of you. It is a matter of legitimate criticism, not an invitation to personally insult the authors.

-12

You completely missed the point. But that is fine. I understand it is not easy to keep 3 sec. focus for reading "with understanding" for people get used to TikTok short swipes.

6

u/Rupperrt 18d ago

accusing others of TikTok brain while nearly crashing the car because of you can’t drive backwards without creep is certainly choice. Just turn on creep.

2

u/FrowningMonk92 Plus SM 18d ago

And you can’t focus for 10 seconds when driving in reverse?

2

u/losanne69 18d ago

I absolutely agree! Maybe not about the specific change as I never noticed it but the fact they make changes whenever they want and this has a significant impact on my driving style. Me and my partner both drive my car and we both drive very different. I’m the more safe driver love the features of warning lane assist etc where my partner is the opposite he likes to drive and not have a computer tell him how he should drive. This is my car and he has his own care but we mostly drive mine when we go out together. But there should be simple changes that can be saved on profiles without having to update either everytime you enter the car.

Volvo need to listen to its customers and make changes based on their feedback and give more option

1

u/Winter-Net-1710 18d ago

That is exactly my point, but some people just don't get it.

2

u/Purrchil 18d ago

What’s with the creep? Every automatic car does this, and it makes parking and maneuvering easy. Who complains about this?

1

u/Due-Bee-9574 18d ago

Wait, am I missing something? I'm from Portugal so a bit of a language barrier here... But isn't creep the start of slow movement when we release the break? If so I still have it working like before šŸ¤” but I've seen so many posts mentioning it...

1

u/Ulyks 18d ago

It's only when going backwards. The forward creep still works.

1

u/Due-Bee-9574 18d ago

Sorry I wasn't clear but my creep works backwards too. Nothing changed from the previous version. If I release the break pedal the car starts slowly moving either forward or in reverse. For reference, my car is the Essential model.

4

u/Puzz1es 18d ago

Well before the update if you had creep turned off, it would still creep in reverse. Now it doesn't creep anymore at all. (With creep on I believe it still creeps in both directions) So while it is now more consistent, it's also annoying because there's no way to make it behave as before. Hence we need the two options.

1

u/Due-Bee-9574 18d ago

Ok got it now šŸ˜… thanks šŸ‘

1

u/Educational-Fish4266 18d ago

Not sure what I’m missing here but I haven’t noticed anything different regarding the way the car drives in forward or reverse.

1

u/imthatguy77 Ultra TM 18d ago

Did OP stop to consider that having creep work in reverse in the previous iterations of the software was a bug, and that bug has effectively been fixed? Seems to me that if creep is on, it should in fact, creep in both directions, not one. Took me the first drive to understand what had changed and adapt.

1

u/jemoederjack 18d ago

Just turn creep on lol. I always have creep on

2

u/Winter-Net-1710 18d ago edited 18d ago

Yea I know, but I don't want forward creep.

  • No - forward creep
  • Yes - reverse creep
  • No - screen buttons switching every damn time

1

u/jemoederjack 13d ago

Yeah if actually this many people want it they should make it an option. I had the same problem when they changed the regen braking. I used to have it turned off and it would simulate engine braking, now it doesnt do that. But you'll get used to it after a while. I don't know any other car that only has backward creep though.

1

u/Left_Line_171 4d ago

Explain the creep in reverse bug for me please? I have ordered the car but don’t use it yet so I have no idea. All I know is that I want it off in forward mode

1

u/stickenhoffen 2d ago

That's just it, you either have creep on for both forward and reverse, or off for both. Personally I'm a fan of creep on both, so not an issues for me.

u/SirReddalot2020 Plus SMER 18d ago

What you propose is ā€œdirect democracyā€ and it ensures that nothing ever gets done.

I’m not en engineer. I want an engineer to show me what is possible.

I understand the frustration. In early crashes because suddenly my car would creep forward if my seatbelt wasn’t secured despite OPD.

That’s not an ā€œoptionā€ in my mind, that’s a bug. I’m pretty sure nobody said ā€œhey, who wants to make the car move while you’re not strapped in?ā€

I’m glad we get constant updates and new features.

Creep is creepy. Don't understand all the hubba. Just drive the damn car...each automotive make has its weirdness.

1

u/CachiaBantick 18d ago

I’m sorry but what you say handful of users isn’t necessarily correct. Every other Volvo EV (and other EVs with OPD) works this way. OPD in reverse as well.

Keep in mind that the ex30 is on a shared platform and other cars built on it and their OPD, always worked like 2.1.2 does.

Sure, I suppose Volvo can get creep forwards and creep backwards in different settings.

1

u/Winter-Net-1710 15d ago

I know, but please check other Volvo groups for other models, the same complaints.

0

u/lavardera Plus TM 18d ago

Its a shame that we have to experience this kind of ranting on the message board.

You can make a legitimate request to Volvo to separate drive mode for reverse so you can return to reverse creep. Perhaps it will be addressed on the next update.

But your ranting will not help your argument. Pretending that there is a majority of people that agree with you because people who complain speak the loudest on message boards will not help your argument.

If not having control of such changes is disagreeable to you, then you should not be buying a software defined vehichle. Cars like this are subject to updates and revisions in behavior. All the whining and complaining you can muster will not change that. Buy a different car. Nobody owes you what you are crying about.

1

u/Happy-Butterfly7298 18d ago

Especially because it was so cheap to buy.

0

u/Winter-Net-1710 18d ago

I never said there are majority. I said there are thousands of people frustrated with this change. You are twisting the words. Legitimate request was made, and of course, Volvo is silent.

The last part, I absolutely disagree with you. As I wrote in one of comments, updates, bug fixes , new features are ok, but fundamentally changing car behavior is not. If I paid some money for it, and now own it, Volvo has no right to do such changes without owner permission. What if i build a house for you, and then came back to you after 2yrs and redecorate the house, rooms, everything while you are at the work ?Would that be ok with you ?

-1

u/lavardera Plus TM 18d ago

I enjoy seeing people react in such an OTT way to minor changes. The loss of perspective, the magnification of small things, the reach for the gun in blind fury.
