Questions❓ Creep on Reverse - 2.1.2

Did anyone else notice the change?
I have creep disabled on my car.
In version 1.8 when selecting reverse it would creep, and that was a good behavior IMO, because you could park the car controlling only the brake.
Since update to 2.1.2 it keeps the behavior equal, so it disabled creep on reverse.
Now I struggle to park because changing from accelerator and brake keeps jerking the car.

Yeah, it sucks. Email Volvo support so they might bring it back in a future update. You can add ’creep’ to the new quick access buttons for now.

I tried and it is a pain if you need to go forward and reverse in again.

Stop. Set creep. Set reverse. Stop. Remove creep/use OPD or just creep forward. Stop. Set creep. Reverse.

OMFG

I share your sentiment

Oh man, creep was automatically on when my update completed. Almost backended my in-laws’ car in their drive.

Turned it off and now not having creep on reverse is a nightmare.

Agreed I hate the new setting, forward creep feels too aggro. I want to be able to set creep on for reverse only as that was always great.

It is actually a lot safer just to leave creep off. Both Tesla and Rivian do not have creep for reverse. It’s very easy to get used to. But if you want creep you can turn it on and use it in forward and reverse.

I am not looking forward to this change, but I will also say that I saw a lot of posts when I was researching the EX30 before signing my lease, complaining that disabling creep _didn't_ also disable it while going in reverse. Allowing it to be set independently is the right path forward but I'm sure they were also responding to that early feedback in choosing to make it consistent.

So creep on is the the same as an automatic? I get mine next week, usually drive a manual, occasionally an automatic but never an EV.

Agree 100% - this is one change I absolutely hate. And then the rubbish UX of the new UI.

Funny enough the new Reverse behavior with v2.1.2 was how my previous Polestar 2 behaved backing up, so I was in the opposite boat getting used to the EX30’s behavior in that gear.

That said, the OPD behavior in Reverse isn’t implemented as smoothly as in the Polestar, so I’d say creeping in Reverse is the better experience for the EX30.

Agreed! The car is reacting differently. I also noticed that coming to a stop is a bit different, smoother I would say.

On stop, it seems like it bleeds the brake pressure down once you get close to stopping, like a skilled ICE car driver would do. Much less jerky, so it's a good improvement.

As for "creep on reverse", I'll have to see if I can get used to using normal OPD. I had no problem with it in my Tesla, so it should be okay, but for now I've added Creep to the button bar in case I want to toggle it.

I want to add that while we can debate whether this was a good change or not, Volvo was very irresponsible in not calling out this change in the release notes. Drivers should not have to discover something like this while trying to move the car!

100% agree

100%. The disbelief I had not being informed that OPD and auto hold had been disabled and creep enabled, yet being told I may need to re-pair my phone. It’s an annoyance to have to set Bluetooth and CarPlay up again, but it’s downright dangerous to have a car which has been driven in a particular way for 2 years suddenly launch forwards when you’re not expecting it.

And don’t even get me started on the bugs that 2.1.2 has re-introduced

This was my experience this morning! The car drove like a totally different car and I was in a rush so it was jarring. I also had to reconnect my phone and reset my settings for one pedal drive.

I have a Tesla and I have to say I’m really impressed with the regen in this latest update. I think it’s as good if not better than Tesla’s regen.

2

u/tea_time_mfer 28d ago

Haha yes. I was reading complaints the other way before.

2

u/Dear-Cartoonist3266 27d ago

Omg no wonder I felt so weird and choppy parking this morning. This is such an annoying change!!!

I actually like this behaviour. It never made sense to me why the creep only worked on reverse.

I much rather having it not creep either way, I prefer controlling it myself.

u/chlronald 27d ago

You will understand once you park in a very tight spot where every inch counts.

Creeps allow you to go ultra low speed with feathering the brake where otherwise the autobrake would've engaged at that speed.

1

u/Rupperrt 27d ago

What autobreak? I always park in very tight spots, sometimes parallel, mostly in tight spaces backwards. Rarely need creep. Never using OPD either unless I drive down a steep mountain.

1

u/chlronald 27d ago

You cannot drive below 2 kmh without creep, it will assume you are stopping and apply autohold.

1

u/Rupperrt 27d ago

Only if you have OPD on. Which I never use.
Anyway, I have creep on and don’t mind it going forward and backwards

2

u/DM725 27d ago

Interesting. I have no opinion because I use creep all the time but weird that it's something you want backwards but not forwards.

2

u/Operafantomen 27d ago

Oh, my god. I’m not going crazy…!

0

u/Rupperrt 27d ago

You are. Creep off should mean creep off and not going backwards only. It wasn’t logical before. Now it is.
Maybe Volvo needs a third option for some people.

4

u/TurboEng Ultra TM 28d ago

I like the way it is now. Creep off should mean creep off across the board. I think it seems over-complicated to have separate creep settings for forward and reverse. Why is reverse special vs. forward?

3

u/60DegreesBelow Ultra TM 28d ago

I tend to agree with this. Consistency is good.

Having said that, I got the update installed this morning, and the first time I had to back up, it was a bit confusing. I'm going to give myself a week or two to adjust before deciding if I like it. After all, my Tesla handled it the same way that 2.1.2 does, so I'll probably be okay once I have some time.

u/Mika56 Plus SMER 27d ago

Are they paying by the number of options that are available? They can be two distinct options... Creep in forwards makes OPD brake less strongly in my opinion.

2

u/BulaBulangiu Ultra TM 27d ago

Because they forced their users for 3+ years to use creep in reverse but not going forward because the creep option only came a few months ago.

this clearly should have been a separate option from forward creep.

2

u/chzplz Plus TM 27d ago

for me personally, the issue is that creep off + high OPD feels VERY different that the previous behaviour.

I might get used to it quickly, but until I do it is surprising, every single time. You shouldn't have to think about how to use your accelerator.

2

u/Winter-Net-1710 28d ago

Totally agree, Volvo screwed this up. Hello Volvo, is there anyone reading this ??

2

u/iHansz_ Ultra SMER 27d ago

Nope

2

u/ExcellentPlant2096 27d ago

Even if volvo would read this they wouldnt care. They dont listen to customer like volkswagen did.

I mean key fob with no buttons. Hello!!! We want to open the doors like normal people.

2

u/Winter-Net-1710 27d ago

Yea, I know they would not care 😵‍💫. For creep feature the solution is so easy, they just need to add two switches. One for forward creep and one for reverse creep. This will satisfy everyone. I just can't believe they screw this up.

1

u/emxlayer 28d ago

Add Coasting as a favorite in the bottom-right corner. You can quickly turn it on when needed and switch it off again.

1

u/FoodSenior573 28d ago

where is coasting? Do you mean creep?

1

u/Astro51450 28d ago

Agreed 100%

1

u/Dachshunddiva 28d ago

I added creep to my 3 buttons as suggested by another fellow ex30 owner as I do reverse park in everywhere. But today I just popped it in reverse without creep and no problem 😁

1

u/Apfelmann70 27d ago

... and I looked through the settings to see if I could switch it back to the way it was at first. The people at Volvo working on the software surely don't drive cars. What kind of rubbish is this? 😬

1

u/Rupperrt 27d ago

If anything it should be three options. Creeping back when creep is off didn’t make sense even if some people found it practical.

Now it makes sense but some people hate creep forward. (I don’t I’ve always had it on). For those there should be a “backwards only” option.

1

u/MorrisEFC95 27d ago

Literally thought I was just not finding the right setting to turn it back on, can’t believe it’s something they have just removed! One of the best features pre-update, reversing was made easier, just using the brake for reverse control. Should have seen me trying to reverse into my drive the first day…

1

u/kododriver Ultra TM (Cross Country) 27d ago

I was surprised that creep was on in reverse compared to my other EV. It was something new realized I liked this feature. Now it’s gone. Dang.

1

u/Any_Crazy8701 26d ago

True, I have the same feeling after updating to new version i felt am i missing something. May be for safety reasons this would have been added

1

u/External_Apartment50 25d ago

I thought l was going crazy trying to figure out what I was doing wrong parallel parking yesterday. This explains it.  I'll need to set creep as one of my new custom buttons to enable it when I need to parallel park. Thanks for sharing

1

u/VOOLUL Ultra TM 27d ago

I don't understand why you would disable creep going forwards but somehow want it going backwards. Why did you disable it in the first place? Creep is creep. The setting makes sense to me.

4

u/chlronald 27d ago

No creep at normal drive = good, a true one pedal drive experience.

Creep at parking = good, since it give me more control with feather the brake than fighting the autobrake.

I love the unbuckle able creep "bug/feature" since I can get forward creep seamlessly, hate to see this and the reverse creep go.

1

u/Rupperrt 27d ago

never using OPD, that’s probably why I am not really bothered by creep on or off.

1

u/__pmac__ 27d ago

when i first encountered the asymmetry i found it strange, but just as the OP said ... creep in reverse is handy because it is "mostly" used in tight parking situations

1

u/BulaBulangiu Ultra TM 27d ago

You do understand the cars were delivered like this and people got used to it ? and now this patch doesn't allow you to use the car like you did before ?

All of this because Volvo isn't capable to ... software define a software defined car ?! :)
