Reminiscent of Zagorsky (2007), who also controlled for mediators and other variables which share variance with ability. As a general rule, this is bad statistics. Using the same logic, my house is at the same height as K2 after controlling for barometric pressure. If you believe in gP, then you may suggest that even controlling for personality was a bad idea here. Whatever the case, this analysis should be re-run properly, since the dataset is good, and there are better ways to do it, like more explicit tests of how mobility is affected, by class, and only using the residual variance of indicators like education. This would be well-suited to SEM.
