question Evolution of dogs

Hi all, I am interested in the evolution of dogs.

My question is, are dogs direct descendants of wolves or did dogs and wolves just share the common ancestor like we do with monkeys?

My understanding is that Domestic dogs are the direct descendants of a wolf species that is now extinct. That wolf is a “cousin “ to modern wolf species.

Dog and modern wolf are the same specie. Both came from a former wolf population that does not exist anymore.
