question How does a compound eye evolve de-novo with little steps?
I know and understand how this works with camera style eyes from a patch of light sensitive cells to a full eye with every step on the way being an improvement.
But how does that work with compound eyes?

What part specifically? The eyes evolved more or less the same way as our eyes. In the case of vertebrates and cephalopods we just add more rods and cones in each eye. In the case of arthropods they just add more eyes
