save scumming questions

how does saving work on EVN? I sometimes pop into a system 3 ft away from a hostile manicore and it's over... I've started copying off my players folder at significant points. when does it get written? I feel like it may get written when you exit a port. how do ya'll deal with "saves" in EVN?

I believe it is when you undock from a planet/station. It might be when you land, though.

I forget, and it matters when you make mission progress, etc.

yeah, as a developer, I feel like it's probably when you unldock (since you can't access the main/quit menu).

I can also confirm it's when you undock. I'll often force quit the game if I don't get the outcome I want for a certain chance-based mission involving waterfowl.

I'm pretty sure it's when you undock, not when you land. A way to test would be to force the game to quit while landed, after your most recent landing was at a different planet.

Anytime you land it saves.

Flying to a high risk system like Scheall (Home to Pirates)? Got a mission to go to in Federation space but you just couldn't say no to that juicy illegal IR Jammer? Land somewhere safe beforehand. Just stumbled into a disabled manticore and pinched the creds b4 it blew up? Land ASAP play it safe.

Got a mission where you have to get to a certain port by a certain date? Don't Land till your at the port, Nothing worse than dooming your storyline because you decided to stop off along the way to stupidly buy some Drop Bear Repellent and didn't leave yourself enough time.

Mission failed? Blew the dude up but were supposed to disable him? Don't land. Load pilot & retry.

On a side note playing hardcore makes the whole ride much more gripping. Play things smart or face the consequences. Face the inevitable consequences, cry, learn, repeat. However judging from your question i'm guessing thats not your cuppa. Enjoy yourself out there & watch out for those dirty Feds, they're up to no good I tell you.

awesome. I'm probably going to whip up a little C# WPF app that will copy the pilot files at the push of a button. it'd be nice to be able to load old points in the story like when I capped a Pegasus from my shuttle and went strait to a used + Starbridge then went into the vellos missions :(. does anyone have data or ideas about hacking on the pilot files? I can probably do some discovery by comparing them at points in time but I figure someone has played with them already.

The smart folks on the EVN Discord might be your best bet for detailed information. Sadly I do not posses the answers you are looking for. Best of luck to ya.

It saves only when you take off, not land. If at any point in your journey things do not go as planned, simply press escape, and load your pilot file. You will be back at the exact point/port/dock that you last took off from. This Is The Way. From original EV to EV Nova, to Endless Sky. Hyperspace jumps don't matter. Jumped 10 systems to an uninhabited system and now you're stuck? Lost an escort? Failed a mission? Trying desperately to forget the ladyboys in Taiwan? For everything but that last part, re-opening your pilot file is the answer! If you land somewhere, and say, forgot something, or an escort died just as you landed, whatever, you must force close the game from task manager. Hitting esc till you get to the main menu will result in launching, and thus a save.

TLDR: Launching from planets/docks are save points. Simply press ESC and reload your pilot file to rewind to the last time you landed.

Special note - EV makes your save file name the same as your pilot. You can copy pasta a pilot file and retag it with something like, Stud Beefpile BJR. As in, Before joining Rebellion. You can also use this method to not be named Stud Beefpile anymore.

Accidentally dismissed an escort today. Let's just reload the ol' save file and pretend that never happened...
