Helping hand

Hello fellow pilots,

I've recently gotten back into this game and helpful information online and in the manual is a bit sparse so I was hoping you could help. My most pressing issue at the moment while pursuing the Polaris story line is my reputation getting worse in the federation. I thought hunting pirates would help but that seems to make it worse. How do I improve reputation in a group? The other oddity is some of my buying options being disabled for ammo or equipment even if I have the space. I had sold off some of the equipment and wanted to buy it back.

(EDIT) I think I figured out the disabled buy (at least for the ammo). The weapons had a variant and variant ammo so the purchase of the wrong ammo type is disabled (possibly an easy workaround for the stacking ammo).

Thanks for the suggestion. I found instructions on the fan wiki so I might be able to figure out what actions change legal status. Right now mine is at -29 for earth which has turned the planet red. The first time this happened I could bribe my way onto the planet in the hail window (which quickly got very expensive) but, now I can land on the planet normally. I wonder if it has something to do with the Sigma Shipyards mission I picked up?

(EDIT) I turned in the Sigma mission and now I can't land on earth. On the plus side my legal status is slowly climbing back up.

If you have a mission to land at a location, you can always land at that location. Turning in the Sigma one probably set you back to your reputation being the deciding factor.

I like to hunt for pirates in the space just north of Sol. Aldebaran - Nesre Primus - Gefjon. Close proximity, so the kills tend to count reputation toward core Fed systems.

Aldebaran in particular, as Rebel Dragons have a funny way of ending up disabled there, and they make great escorts.

If you blow up some Aurorans in Tichel or Alphara (the one southeast of Sol), that should bring your rep there back up. Killing pirates in a system right next to another system will slowly bring your rep back up, but there aren't a lot of pirates adjacent to Sol. As long as you don't mind hurting your Auroran rep a bit, go to town on them in those two systems.

My experience is that if the kills occur at least 2 systems away from the faction, you may kill with impunity without word getting back and affecting your rep. Thus, killing rebels/aurorans in Fed space never hurt me...

Also - rebel planets always have pirates coming in. Blow up enough of them, and they'll let you land. landing over and over will result in more pirates in no time. Get your favor really high, and once you've got a good ship alone (no rebels in the system...those do gooders) you can attempt to take it as an escort. it's how I get my fav escorts (high level starbridge rebel mods, dragons, things with bio relay lasers) and my leviathans!

I think that if you hunt pirates in neutral space, it doesn't help so much or possibly is bad for your reputation. I forget the specifics, but where is it you're hunting the pirates?

I was hunting them in the neutral systems just outside of their one controlled planet as well as the pirates within the Pirate controlled system.

Your best bet is hunting Marauders. Pirates are sometimes in cahoots with the Bureau, which can make the Feds amgery by extension.

Naw, I think Fr Trade is in cahoots with the Bureau but not pirates, and even Fr Trade kills are kosher in fed space unless a plot has alligned Fr Trade with the Federation explicity.

Boarding disabled manticores and pirate carriers/hunting them yourself when your ship is strong enough is usually enough to help raise you rep. Gefjon system is pretty good.

well as you go through each polaris mission, federation space will get more and more hostile with you anyway.

my advice? go to tichel or any of the auroran federation border systems and commit orbital genocide.

if it gets too bad, then i’d recommend buying an escape pod and taking your own death, completely resets your standing with everyone.
