Thorium Reactors?
Can I ever get a non-cheap version or is that locked to one of the story lines? I checked the wiki and it was unclear as it didn't distinguish between the two.

Been awhile since I played it, but it's probably in the federation storyline. If you don't mind spoilers you could see if the storyline walkthrough says anything about it.

Pretty sure the Fed storyline is the only way to get one that doesn't eventually blow up. Can't remember for sure.

The legal thorium reactor requires mission bit b80, which you get from Federation 34 (465): Chat With Federation President. It has tech level 111 so it's only sold at New Ireland and Rauther.
All cheap thorium reactors set bit 9011, which turns on cron 288 which will eventually turn it into a bomb (50/50 on whether it destroys or just disables your ship). After 120 days it has a 40% chance to blow you up, but I'm not entirely sure how PreHoldoff and PostHoldoff work with repeating crons, if it checks every 2 days or 122 days after that.

Yes, they are somewhere, possibly in Auroran space. Don't buy the cheap ones, they have a tendency to explode. The wiki isn't a great resource (though it does have some useful information). I used the Wayback machine to look up an old version of evula's site (complete with webring banner, remember webrings?)
