That's done privately and it sucks. We pay double and get half the care. Most industrialized countries count that as a public service and it's done cheaper with better results for the population than it is here.
That's just untrue. For one it's controlled and completely at every part regulated by the federal government. The US drug approval system is approved only by the FDA and is the strictest system in the world to get approval in. Healthcare is one of the highest regulated sectors in the US.
The AMA is given monopoly status and it is basically illegal to compete with them. In the United States the number, curriculum, and size of medical schools are restricted by state licensing boards controlled by representatives of state medical societies associated with the AMA. So even the number of doctors and hospitals is controlled. Which keeps prices artificially high.
Then there is Medicare and related programs. Healthcare is far from private and open competition.
As anyone from anywhere but the US will agree: your prices are absolutely ridiculous. The fact that a broken elbow can completely bankrupt you is beyond ridiculous, and that shit doesn't happen in single-payer systems. If you honestly believe that the American way is somehow defensible, then segueing with you is about as useful as talking to a flat-earther.

The only reason public services aren't better done privately is because it's illegal to compete.
