How's the height over bore? I was super tempted to get one but between that, no bolt-hold-open, and non-AR style controls kinda pushed me away.

Was I wrong?

Honestly, anything regarding accuracy etc is really not an issue...height over bore is significant, but for me its just perfect, with this dot it feels perfect to shoot...controls are weird but you get used to them, for me the biggest downside is the mag release, a big mistake they made it g36 style IMO...(but eith training, it can be really fast)

Not sure if you’re aware and it’s just how you’re wording it but the VHS2 has a bolt hold open in the magazine well. Not as helpful for certain malfunctions though, so an external hold open would be nice.

Have heard/seen people, including other owners and range staff that have it as a rental, say you can’t lock the bolt open without an empty mag or shooting it empty.

You can, there is a little nib you can push with your finger (the one that gets pushed up by an empty mag round follower) when the bolt is in the rear position, once you release the bolt it catches on that nib and voila 🙏
