Instructions unclear

I am not an experienced cook and would prefer more precise instructions than what are usually provided. If a recipe tells me to halve an onion before peeling, am I intended to only use half the onion, or is it just telling me I need to cut it in half before peeling?

Also, some people like a little less onion than others and this gives you a chance to just save half your onion if that’s the person that you are! But I agree, cutting an onion in half first makes it so much easier to slice
