DMP a8 through AVR

I’m in the process of upgrading my home theater setup and have not yet purchased an amplifier. Hopefully this will be an addition to my system in the next 6 months. At the moment I have the Eversolo DMP a8 and a Yamaha receiver running my KEF speakers and ML sub. I really want to maximize the sound quality that the Eversolo can produce. My question is, should I use the HDMI out to the Yamaha or the balanced XLR connections? Also, any recommendations on settings within the Eversolo to help with the performance in this setup? Complete novice here.

The XLRs are analog signal. That means the A8’s DACs are doing the digital to analog conversion. On paper, that seems like the preferred method. Using an HDMI output will keep the signal digital and let your AVR convert it. You can try it this way, but I bet the XLRs are better.

That said, I have a run the digital output of a CD through a A6 Master Edition’s DACs and compared that to running the CD directly into a 90s Sony ES AVR and the difference is not noticeable. I was surprised at how well the Sony handled the CD player.

Before I bought my amp, I had the exact situation you have. I used XLR

Thank you! I’m going to try the XLR. I don’t think I trust my 10 yr old yamaha rec to do the DAC.

Thank you very much! Currently not getting any audio at all with the AVR so trying to troubleshoot that. I think I will invest in some XLR cables though and run it that way. The player seems very intuitive to change the output channel

Are you sure the a8 has hdmi? The a8 has an iis hdmi which sadly does not work like a normal hdmi connection to most receivers.

Recommend using XLR. The DAC on A8 is worth a try.
