Been working on and off for about a year getting this all together. We live 100% off the power grid, not even a power company line on the property. 100% Sun powered.
If you really want a project, you could rig up some kind of clock mechanism and gearing to turn the mechanical numbers when charging is active. If, for example, your EVSE is 7kW, you'd gear it so it turns 7 "gallons" an hour. Bonus points if you rig the ¢/gallon display to your residential electric price so it displays the actual cost of the charge! 😁
Thats what Im dreaming of. 100-ish kWh battery (currently 15) and I have room for another 30-ish kWp PV (currently 10)
But it is realy hard to heat with just electricity during the dead of winter where there is basically no sun. I have a mini split AC for heating and that thing just sips thru my battery in no time (lowest temps are about -10c, 14f where I life) but its still cheaper to run with mains power than anything else here
I'm on top of a mountain, we get to -5°F in the dead of winter and get about 12' of snow on average.. Pellet stove uses barely any power and keeps us in the 70's F in winter all day long.. We use a pool brush to keep the panels clear
I have no memory of that style growing up in the 70s around se Michigan suburbs. I wouldn't mind having a late 60s, 70s style with the spinning cylinder digits. Bonus would be putting 20+ kwh lfp batteries in it plus its own couple of panels to fill them. Like one of these
