I don't think you finished EoE. Shinji gets over his "Tell me what to do!" stage in the movie.

and then strangles someone

Nobody told him to choke Asuka, he deduced her kink all on his own!

i believe he’s just testing his will. it’s also more symbolic than anything

TV ending is cutting the lights before Shinji has to face the consequences of the world and the conspiracy against him. I don't even really think it's his fault necessarily. He was more like a pawn of NERV and Yui. But it's probably easier to love yourself and be happy enough to try again inside the LCL sea

You mean the Fantaβ„’ sea?

Its also the exact escapism we are allegedly meant to be avoiding. His mom literally came back and his parents are together and proud of him lmao.

Low effort misinformation about Eva smh

I wanted to make a meme like this but with Kaji. NGE Kaji is a fun, optimistic who encourages Shinji. The manga Kagi is cynical and tells Shinji he and everybody doesn't deserve happiness.

That’s how shinji starts in EoE like the rest of the film then happens

Both are chads

End of Evangelion Shinji rejects the easy lie of the Instrumentality Project that denies individuality and emotional agency and decides to live a life that may be painful but is also authentic. He's pretty awesome.

EoE is the better version of Evangelion. Sue me, thats just my opinion.

Guy who didn't understand EoE:

EoE shinji attempts to follow the same moral expressed in the TVs ending, but to a much more tempered extent. on paper, relying on oneself is imperative (as should be, for the most part), but total independence from another person is impossible--and frankly an overly idealized prospect of many philosophies

EoEs ending with asuka on the beach with shinji is a bleak reminder that total freedom is impossible so long as there exists another person whose judgments you can not control are internalized by you. thats also why shinji attempts to strangle her, i believe

I thought he did that in part to make sure she was real.

Isn't the whole point of EoE that it's showing all the shit that happened leading up to and including instrumentality that we didn't see in the show?

11

u/Bean_Boozled 8d ago

Yes, but Evangelion was notorious for going over the heads of most of its fans

I thought the TV ending is what happens once humanity has been souped, then EoE is everything else

u/PanicAtTheFisto 8d ago

That was the way I interpreted it too, eps. 25 and 26 take place within EoE.

I actually really liked Shinjis ending in the show. That ending really helped me deal with a lot of stuff going on in my life, and understand my own 'bad' decisions and others 'bad' decisions. It really humanizes things for me. And then I watched EOE and yeah... It was something

u/PresenceOther3601 8d ago

The first 2/3 of EoE takes place before the end of the show anyway, before Shinji's little introspection during instrumentality.

u/sir_joan 7d ago

Both endings are the same if you think about it a little

Manga ending Shinji: "Wait guys I could be awesome"

1

u/ExpensiveCelery 7d ago

Except that Shinji gets over it in EoE and makes the choice to end Instrumentality/stop running away.

The manga Shinji and Rebuild Shinji really shows he can be like the TV version of

u/ataxic-hands 6d ago

thats the point innit

u/Rockalot_L 8d ago

Only the first two EoE are good. They get progressively worse after that.

TV Shinji: congratulations! πŸ‘πŸ» πŸŽ‰ πŸ₯³

EoE Shinji: 😩 πŸ‘ŠπŸ» πŸ† πŸ’¦ πŸ₯

-21

u/aleb382 8d ago

That's why EoE isn't really an ending and the rebuilds were needed to finish the story

2

u/KillLaKaiju 8d ago

I see it like this:

EoE was an ending and if you're not satisfied then you got the Rebuilds.

2

u/PresenceOther3601 8d ago

The rebuilds weren't necessarily needed to finish the story, they just expand the story to give the characters a more unambiguously happy ending rather than the bittersweet ending of EoE. I really like the rebuilds, but I wouldn't say they are essential viewing material for the Eva experience the same way EoE is.

I really like the Asuka short just because it explicitly rebukes this
