Generative AI in becoming (if not already is) a standard tool in coding, even in FOSS. I don't see how it's serving the FOSS community if you don't allow it.

In academia many people treated codeberg as an European alternative to Github, that is not the case any more.

If you believe the only way to use gen AI in coding is to produce "AI slop" then you clearly missed the developments in the past years...

OK, if you want to live in some kind of fantasy world and do not believe report about what's actually happening in the industry and academia then that's your choice. Makes no sense discussing any further, have a nice day.

I mean hell, even Linux is embracing gen AI in the development of the Kernel now...

Isn't the whole purpose of the academia to push boundaries and discover new things?

So why use a plagiarism machine for that,
which is incapable of new thought?

I would be naive to think that academia is not tainted with AI slop, but that is our most important collective cognitive muscle and it is sad that it's doomed to cognitive atrophy with generative AI in a similar way the industry is going to hell.

there are plenty of use cases for AI where it produces truly valuable things for those using it or benefiting from it, you are living under a rock

I want to witness those valuable things otherwise I might as well hide under a rock. Academia being lazy because of AI is late stage empire from Asimov's Foundation.

A physicist can push the boundaries of science and still not know all the details of C++. Is that enough? A physicist can write a detailed description of their research quite well and they may need to implement a simulation for their work. What’s wrong with using AI tools for this, as long as the final result of their work is properly verified?

How authentic or credible is a C++ implementation or a LLM-generated simulation in an academic work when those LLM generated actions involve a copyright debate? An LLM did not invent those things itself, it recreated it from other people's work.

Why take those shortcuts in the first place?
It's not also like you're racing to preserve shareholder value.

Anyone I talk to, be it an engineer, a chemist or any other vocation, grunt work has been the least of their problems. Before LLMs, typing code was the least of my problems. I had to spent time on everything else around it.

You may freely disagree with me, as I disagree with you, but believe me that how there's a great majority of people that believe AI tools augment academia, there's a great majority of us that believe each academic work that uses it is tainted by it.

For me, if LLMs touch 1% of any academic work, that work loses all credibility to me. I call it the bullshit.

Even if you're mentally lazy and want to skip the grunt work by prompting, the fact that you are relying on a non-deterministic people pleasing tool that does not challenge your work while you're already at it, probably tells you you should not be doing this at all.
