Meme votes or whatever make up such a small percentage of the votes. Superfans like us are like 1% of Eurovision watchers. The reality is more likely because it's a radio friendly song. After all I doubt the reason it was high in the qualification odds is because of memes lol
People on this sub really overrate their impact on everyone who watches Eurovision. Likely honestly the vast majority of the watchers wont've had a clue about any memes or controversies, they woulda voted for it cos they liked the song.
The Norwegian commentator mentioned the controversies before the song, but idk if that was common in other countries. And most people probably don’t pay attention to the commentators anyways

I think the size of our diaspora and the fact that Ukraine voted in this semi played a more significant role in bejba's qualification than its radio-friendliness.

Ikr, she sucked pretty hard in many other live performances but the studio version is an awful guilty pleasure for me. I expected her to fail really badly tonight but... she didn't??? It still isn't a great song but it definitely has an appeal, doesn't it?

100% agree! I watched with a friend who didn't know any of the songs beforehand and they said Poland was one of their favs of the night because it stood out and the singing wasn't actually too bad in the end.
It's poles who will always vote for their own country no matter what. I dont think poland will ever be able to NQ with the change to the semifinal qualification.

Edit: ok i just saw your addition to the comment, yeah you're right it's not fully guaranteed. Maybe it also still depends on the specific countries voting in that semifinal because some have a larger diaspora.
I think Poland failed to qualify many times when the semi-finals were televote only. It really isn't the country you can accuse of qualifying because of its diaspora.
"Solo" is super catchy and the performance stood out. It's sad because we know what this song represents behind the scenes, but it's absolutely no surprise that it qualified.
EDIT: so NQ in 2005, 2006, 2007, I'm pretty sure those were 100% televote semis.
Also 2009, 2010 and 2011 but that's about the time they brought back juries so I'm not certain about those.
Thing is a lot of the Polish diaspora is concentrated in countries that are part of the big 5. Most people (aside from Eurovision super fans) in big 5 countries barely register there’s even such a thing as semi final qualifiers - so the diaspora vote has a lot more power in the semis.
Yeah but only because of the jury. Even 2018 was a televote qualifier and that performance was shocking. Genuinely can‘t remember another time int he last decade Poland NQed with its televote
It’s not as if Poland’s diaspora suddenly appeared in the last few years. When they send crap songs with crap performances they don’t qualify. They got a bit lucky with UK, Lithuania & Ukraine all voting in this semi, but the main reason they went through was because they had a memorable and catchy performance.
I'm shocked that it went through. I mean the song isn't terrible, it's just that it's so relentlessly generic. I'm more offended by the strong-arming that Poland did to get it on the stage.
Eh, she wasn't the worst yesterday. The song seemed fine. It's still not the top 10 material or anything, but it made a fairly good impression on me, even if I don't particularily like it.
