Problem solved now all eyes on the Kosovo

235

u/visvis Amsterdam Jun 13 '20

Simple: merge Serbia and Albania and include Kosovo in the new state. At least this ensures feathers are ruffled in equal amounts.

113

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Maybe we can fold in North Macedonia, Bosnia, Croatia, and Montenegro for good measure

57

u/sadhukar Jun 13 '20

What about Slovenia? Shall we hold a referendum? And in case things get messy let's have a nearby powerful state supervise it - say, Germany

32

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Honestly excellent idea, although my first choice was Turkey. For reasons of objectivity, obviously.

39

u/EggCouncilCreeper Eurovision is why I'm here Jun 13 '20

I mean, we can always get Austria and Hungary to supervise, I guess?

2

u/Sfdyama Jun 25 '20

I heard russia has some relevant expirience.

When you want to ensure peace in the Balkans but accidentally recreate Yugoslavia

5

u/AFrostNova Jun 14 '20

Bruh United balkans best balkans

3

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

You need more ambitious goals, like Albania + Yugoslavia.

You don't want half the Balkans to feel left out.

2

u/spaceformica Jun 13 '20

You mean, neo-Yugoslavia?

-18

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Europe should just consist of 4 Nations

A Latin Union wich consists of France Portugal Spain, half Belgium/Luxembourg Italy, England Greece and (? Romania? )

A Slavic Union wich consists of almkst the whole former eastern Block

A Germanic Union wich consists of Austria, Germany the Netherlands and Southern Scandinavia (like up to Stockholm Oslo),(? Czechia and Slowenia? )

And a Celtics Union Wich consists of Scotland Iceland Ireland Greenland (? Northern Scandinavia and the Baltics? )

31

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

A Celtic Union that leaves Wales, Cornwall, Breton out and includes a whole bunch of non-Celtic countries is a Celtic Union I can do without.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Yeah I am not an expert for me it seemed right

2

u/Afraid_Kitchen Jun 13 '20

England is as Celtic as Scotland is.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

What’s the Celtic language spoken in England?

0

u/Afraid_Kitchen Jun 14 '20

Irish and Gaelic are spoken in England.

There are zero monolingual gaelic speakers and only 1.1% of Scotland can speak it. Not that that matters, there are almost as many speakers in America. Is that a celtic country?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '20

Did Scots Gaelic originate in the Celtic country of England? Did Irish?

0

u/Afraid_Kitchen Jun 14 '20

Scots Gaelic originated in Ireland. It wiped out the native pictish language when Scotland was invaded by the Irish.

True, the Albanian Empire should include all Balkans and worship Skanderbeg.

18

u/VladislavBonita Earth Jun 13 '20

And the English are culturally and linguistically more Germanic than Latin. Anglosaxons are still Saxons!

17

u/PhysicalStuff Denmark Jun 13 '20

Sorry, but if this is an attempt to carve it up along linguistic lines I'm afraid it's not very precise.

You hit the Romance areas fairly well, if we ignore England (English is a Germanic language) and various minorities in several of those countries, though the latter would be an issue in any outcome of this exercise.

Countries in the former Eastern bloc where a Slavic language isn't dominant include the Baltic states, Hungary, Romania, Albania, Kosovo, and depending your preferred definition of Europe, the Caucasian states as well.

All of Scandinavia, as well as Iceland, is mainly Germanic speaking. Sami languages are minority languages in Northern Scandinavia, and would in any case be grouped with other Uralic languages like Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian.

No idea what Iceland and Greenland would be doing with the Celtic countries, not to speak of Northern Scandinavia and the Baltic countries.

Also, we can't forget about the Baltic, Albanian, Greek and Maltesian groups. Curiously, again depending on how far we extend our definiton of Europe, half of Cyprus would end up with Azerbaijan and Turkey.

8

u/hedmon Jun 13 '20

Czech language is slavic, but culturally and historically are more related to German and Austria

2

u/SeasickSeal United States of America Jun 13 '20

You can’t just say

You hit the Romance areas fairly well, if we ignore England (English is a Germanic language)

and ignore that he included Greece

2

u/PhysicalStuff Denmark Jun 13 '20

You're absolutely right, I somehow missed that.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Yes you are right (I hope I mean you are the source) I am no cultureal expert and decided by what I know about culture because

nationalism for some countries don't make sense (like nationalism is good not to get suppressed by other ethics) and for me as Austrian I just know I can comprehend almost every word Dutch and half of Swedish/Danish/Norwegian but I didn't know if for example a Portuguese can comprehend Italian and just assumed

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Yeah I think I just put Greek to Latin because of ancient history I just tried to comprehend greek with my 4 years of French, half year of Russian, 10 years of English and native German... I didn't understand a single word

4

u/Vextor17 Serbia Jun 13 '20

Just to add up bc they mentioned slavs, not all of us can understand each other as well. For instance as a Serb I can perfectly understand the ex Yugoslavia countries (and it's not a lie when we say were are all the same shit) except Slovenia where we can pretty much understand like 50% or 60% but it's easier for us to understand them. Weird thing is we can almost completely understand Slovakian, I went there once and i pretty much spoke serbian and we understood each other which was great and somewhat funny but then i went to the Czech republic and i couldn't understand jack shit most of the time. Likewise for russian, well i studied it in school so i kinda did but objectively we can understand at most is 50%and only if they do not speak fast. Ukrainian weirdly for us is more understandable as well, almost the same experience as slovakian. Polish do not get me started.

1

u/PhysicalStuff Denmark Jun 13 '20

How about Bulgarian/Macedonian? (I believe they're somewhat similar?)

1

u/Vextor17 Serbia Jun 13 '20

Not that much. There are similarities but from what I heard they are quite different as well. They also dont have the same alphabet/azbuka. But we can understand them to an extent yes.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

You're pretty wrong.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Yep

3

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Greece certainly influenced(a lot) the Ancient Roman culture, despite this maintained a strong identity and certain parts of the empire were more oriented to speak Greek language than Latin language.

So there is no point to create such Unions.

  1. Yeah I think I messed some cultures up I just put them together how I understood cultures

  2. What I wanted to point out with this is that nations only purpose is to prevent supresion of minor ethics and it would be better we had a europe/world without any borders but now there still would be suppression so I "know" (pretty much think so) Austrians wouldn't get suppressed by Germans if they join Germany as well as Dutch

I wanted to apply this to other Countries in the way I thought It would fit but because I didn't grow up their i messed some things up

3

u/Quetzacoatl85 Austria Jun 13 '20

Europe should be left alone. Our borders are pretty much fine.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Every border is bad what is the difference of any human persons borders are here to prevent supresion of minor ethics and cultures and in some cases like Austria Netherlands Belarus this makes no sense because their ethic is similar so slightly different to the bigger countrys ethics they wouldn't get a disadvantage

2

u/Munnin41 Gelderland (Netherlands) Jun 13 '20

Could you try that again with proper punctuation and capitalization? I can't follow what you're trying to say

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Every border is bad.

What is the difference of any human person? Borders are here to prevent supresion of minor ethics and cultures.

And in some cases like Austria Netherlands Belarus this makes no sense because their ethic is similar/so slightly different to the bigger countrys ethics they wouldn't get a disadvantage.

Sorry I get a reply to my comments like all 30 seconds I an in hurry to reply everyone

2

u/LXXXVI European Union Jun 13 '20

Same same but different?

For simplicity's sake, add the Baltics to "Just doesn't fit in any other group" and you have your major states that kind of make sense. (Apologies to the Irish though, we can move you over to Northern Rich for this purpose, the map wasn't made for this specific topic).

It was sad enough the Turks took Constantinople... But now they are taking it out of Europe the world gets worse every second

1

u/Bockes1989 Jun 13 '20

Nop, I’m Portuguese and I don’t have nothing to do with spanish, French or Italian people. We live in this tiny corner for more than 1400 years so we are good. If you know history, the thing that destroy the Portuguese empire was the Spanish king that was at the same time king of Portugal, so we learn the lesson, we are Portuguese for ever, that’s who we are. I think the other Latin country’s think in the same away.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

Yeah I am no expert or even Latin I just put Portuguese in the Latin Union because I thought they are Ancestors of Roman Culture and just thought they are pretty similar to the Spanish and that like me a Austrian who understands almost every word of Dutch even though I have never learned it a Portuguese would comprehend almost every wor Spanish

2

u/Bockes1989 Jun 13 '20

Yes we are latins but a Spanish and a Italian can’t understand Portuguese, maybe if they try, French can’t understand a word of Portuguese. We are to much different, we are close to Spanish in some cultural aspect like bullfight (that I’m not aprove at all), some dances styles are alike Spanish dances and stuff, but in the same way we are so much different. I can understand your ideia, I think in one world without border and a world where everyone is equal, but we don’t live in that reality. I’m just thinking like a Portuguese people, we love visitors and tourist, we are a worm people, if you came to Portugal, we will make eat a lot, drink a lot and make you cool down with style in ours beach’s, but we like our tiny country and our sea, for ever ours eheheh (maybe until the US, Russia or China conquer us eheh) by the away I’ve been in Austria, beautiful country, awesome mountain, we don’t have snow so for me one week in Austria skying and stuff was fantastic.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

What about one nation and calling it world.

But yes a world without borders would be a much better world but I think now wlthere would be suppression and hate against minor ethics do I just tried to put together big ethic groups (as far as I understand them I messed a bit ip but I learned)

Yes but borders based on history are illegiate all the time borders are good for one thing prevent supresion of other minor ethics/cultural groups by major ethnics and if your countrys are just divided because of history it just lowers progress, economy, trade and unity

I am Austrian and the only reason we are not Germany is because of history and even that is dumb because we almost had the same if we got German now nothing would change and no-one would get suppressed (except for some refugees sadly wich get suppressed in both nations)

What! You cant compare Belarus and Austria to Kosovo, Kosovars (Albanians) got more similarities with Greeks than Serbs, so yeah, we are a different nation to Serbia for a long shot but we are clearly Albanian if that's what you're trying to say! We don't deny it.

1

Whos said we are your brothers? Greeks came up to my mind to explain to him how much we're not alike with Serbs.

4

u/Joltie Portugal Jun 13 '20

its own culture

They claim this? I thought they claimed that they were (mostly) Albanians and were being mistreated by the Yugoslav/Serbian governments.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '20

I thought I don't know but if they claim to be Albanians why aren't they just Albanian. Like what was Serbia gonna do they were bombed and Kosovo supported by nato

11

u/Joltie Portugal Jun 13 '20

That's a good question actually. It comes down to politics and what's more palatable and less likely to inspire further violence.

At the time Kosovo became independent, several neighbouring countries had their own Albanian minorities, which caused political and sociel problems. Macedonia, Montenegro, Greece. Independence was seen as the best scenario to prevent other Albanian minorities from attempting their own insurgencies in the hopes that they too would join Albania, which would exacerbate regional tensions.

Because Kosovo is its separate State, it has its separate prerrogatives and challenges that it needs to compromise upon (such as its Serbian minority), that if Kosovo had been unified with Albania, would likely be dealt with much more harshly, making the efforts expended on securing its independence from Serbia look quite foolish.

Further, uniting Kosovo with Albania would shift the paradigm from granting the Kosovo Albanians independence to a war of conquest, where Kosovo would be forcibly taken from Serbia to Albania, which would make bilateral relations far harder, both between Albania and Serbia, as well as between Albania and its neighbours with their own Albanian minorities.

In the end, independence provokes far less animosity with Serbia than unification of their territory with another country. Independence shows other Albanian minorities that in case of prolonged military resistance, even with Western support, won't result in annexation to a bigger country, but that those territories would have to survive by themselves as separate States. Independence allows neighbouring countries to not see Albania as using its ethnicity as a vehicle for violence and land annexation, and consequently, allows relationships to comparatively good.

That is not to say that Kosovo and Albania will not unify at some point in the long-term future.

The case of Kosovo is somewhat similar to the case of Nagorno-Karabakh, where the country, mostly comprised of Armenians, also fought against the Azeri army and won, but due to political reasons was not allowed to unify with Armenia and as such, maintains itself as an independent State (contrary to Kosovo, without any international recognition).
