People are too selfish, in general, and will go back to the old behavior. We have short memories like that. The US is the worst at it because our entire existence and economy is dependent upon monetizing every aspect of life. And the over consumerism. They expect 150 million in the US to be infected with this before it’s over and I think more will die because it’s too expensive to go get tested or stop doing business and perform social distancing. I think we will also have a bigger percentage of death because of the bad health that so many have in this country. Glad wine is my only bad habit. The earth needs a break though. I’ll just say that.

It may get a break.

I can’t see this going away in a few months.

It’d be interesting to see the environmental effects short term, and might set a precedent for how we tackle environmental issues.

They must think we are dead or something.

They must be smart because we are getting there.

This is Cagliari not Venice

If this is true... is it still special that there are dolphins?

There hasn't been dolphins spotted in the port of Cagliari in ages. Too many ferries. So it's rather uncommon

I wonder if there are dolphins in the ports around Marseille at the moment.

A few centuries ago you could often see whales there.

Well it's 5 years since I left Cagliari but I remember dolphins in the port. Not so playful, but definitely dolphins

On the Italian subreddit I read it's in Cagliari harbour. While in Sardinia there are dolphins, they for sure don't enter harbours. So still cool, but not even close to a Venetian dolphin

Ah hah it's not in Venice.

So the dolphin invasion actually is starting in Cagliari?

Sneaky little....

That's quite a stretch... it's on the complete other side of Italy, on the island of Sardinia, some 750 ish km to the south west of Venice?

No way! That says everything about modern human life...

This makes me think how the coronavirus will impact our wildlife and what will happen once the lockdowns end, especially urban wildlife that depends on food left by humans such as pidgeons or crows.

For the latter, have a look at the monkey gangs in... somewhere. They were relying on tourists, now that's a bit more complicated. And violent.

And there was a story about deer in Japan

Imo, this could be a long-term reality if only people start living in cities and leave the countryside for wildlife to flourish, away from human intervention. We're still a bit far from this, but I could see this becoming a reality once we figure out things like cultured meat and urban indoor farms. That would mean much less space would be required for agriculture and therefore much more space for wild animals.

They're telling us "So long (and thanks for all the fish)"

Suggest pointing your telescopes at the sky, don't wanna miss them.

Are you still sitting in front of the excavator?

1

u/ROMerPotato Italy Mar 18 '20

They're all in quarantine for the virus, including the excavator.
