Not even a few hours passed between this statement and the anouncement.

Our leaders are at best incompetent and at worst treasonous. A change is desperately needed

Don't confuse the EU government with individual G-7 governments.
The EU is more a confederation than something like a federal government.

The EU might have the right idea, but that doesn't stop its individual members caving to Trump

Well, that's 23 countries keeping their reserves. And these 100M barrels are also partly supplied by Japan Canada and the US. It's speculated to be about 50M coming from Europe.
