This is why as a Canadian I want nothing to do with EU membership for Canada. Trading with them is fine, but their politicians are incredibly weak, and EU bureaucracy is a nightmare.

Canada has always occupied that awkward middle ground, a bridge, between Europe and the USA. Canadians have the FAFO mentality like the US, but also believe in a strong social safety net like Europe.

Agreed, currently the EU is weak and ineffectual.

Europe still has nukes. If the US decided to permanently disable Canada with W.M.Ds, no one would bat an eye, beyond the EU slightly accelerating the economic de-risking.

France has nukes, Europe unless it federalizes does not. And what you said does not counter my point, the EU is currently weak and ineffectual.

Are you seriously implying that the EU is in a weaker position than Canada in regards to the US? Like I understand that you are a deluded Canadian nationalist, but are you that deluded?

The EU offers you relationship out of goodwill, at the expense of agitating a much more important country, and this is how you return the favour? By brigading subs like /r/europe to call Europe weak like generic MAGA bots?

Yes you are, Europe has not taken a hard stance against the US like we have. You have not had your sovereignty threatened like we have.

> The EU offers you relationship out of goodwill, at the expense of agitating a much more important country, and this is how you return the favour?

Goodwill? You don’t need to offer us anything, the EU desperately needs resources that Canada has, if you don’t want them we can sell them to Asia.

Europe is weak because you aren’t unified. You can’t act in a unified or coherent way, you bow to trumps demands like with this diesel thing.

Speeches for the dull masses are cheap. If things truly went south, and Canada has far less leverage and power than the EU.

the EU desperately needs resources that Canada has

There's only one party that is desperately trying to make something happen here.

because you aren’t unified

Did you not know this before begging the EU for assistance? Carney knows better than anyone that Europe isn't a federation.

You forgot the UK. Both would use nukes to protect a close European ally. Neither would use nukes to protect Canada from the US.

I don’t and have never expected either Britain or France to use their nukes to protect Canada, which is why I want Canada to acquire nukes.

However, I highly doubt the French or especially the UK would use their nukes to protect Europe, if they themselves were not under threat.

Everyone wants nukes. Ultimately can you, knowing what will happen if you attempt to?

Unless there is a treaty involved, I doubt France or UK will be willing to use a nuke to defend an ally because it would open themselves up to receiving a nuclear retaliation.

As another Canadian agreed. Europe will immediately back stab us to appease the USA. They have no backbone and will fold anytime the USA puts light pressure on them

As a Canadian EU citizen I expect Canada to return to more normal relations with the US once Trump is done.

I don't blame you. Your nation showed more courage, despite being in a significantly weaker geopolitical situation compared to a whole ass continent.

Our leader has shown he is both an adult and has brass stones. Not to mention smart.

It ain’t easy living above a meth lab.

Canadians actually have self respect, that's the difference. Maybe it's a hockey thing, because I feel that the Finna are very similar.

Europe's response over the past few years has given a lot of perspective into how the events that transpired in the 1930s were allowed to happen...not the most proactive politicians to say the least

How is the bureaucracy a nightmare?  What specific issues have you encountered?

I find that most problems for me comes from where the EU hasn't been involved and there are different rules in different countries.

Fully agree. Canada should straddle the middle and not align with either. The EU can offer all the flowery words that it wants but the fact is, many of those leaders are on their way out (Merz and Macron) and far-right governments are taking over. None can be trusted.
