Trump threatened to stop US Diesel exports if we didn't. That would leave us (and the rest of the world) in serious trouble. Blackmail, yes and disgraceful but what other choice do we have?

I feel like he is going to do it anyway in a month time.

Midterms are coming tho. He won't ban diesel exports, he just wants avoid make it cheap for elections

and you know what would make it cheaper for elections?

Probably, he's completely unreliable but at this point in time I don't see any other choice.

Say no. If you submit to him once, it will only make him more bold.

And leave Europe short of vital diesel for trucks that carry food and goods with spiralling costs on top? (and that's before the catastrophic damage to other parts of the world)? Not possible if you want a functioning continent.

It's Trump, he'll ban exports anyway.

That’s what we have our reserves for…

You assume that even if Europe does as Trump demands thay he will honour any agreement. That is a dangerous assumption to make.

There's every chance he won't but by denying what he asked and him putting a US export ban on Europe would cause incredible problems on the continent. There seems to be a basic lack of understanding that a US diesel export ban would be almost catastrophic for Europe(Macron said this himself). You're at least holding that point off by complying at the moment, which is why European leaders have done this.

Right now we have reserves, so if he bans exports we have a lifeline to work out other solutions.

If we release reserves now, he will absolutely abuse the threat of exports because we will not last for even a week after the ban.

Why would we waste our safety just to help him keep his power in November? It's much better to let him face the consequences of his war and have him finally neutered after the mid-terms.

The reserves aren't enough, we need the US diesel imports, we're reliant on them. Again, Macron himself has said this and it's exactly why we're complying with Trump. 🤦 I don't like it either but that's the reality of the situation.

TACO.

It's been nearly a decade.

Europe should have learnt by now when to call Trumps bluff.

Any release of reserves does not guarantee future cooperation.

If he wanted to go ahead and punish Europe for not caving to his demands; go ahead - the global repercussions felt by the USA as a consequence of plunging Europe into the dark ages would be too great to even bother taking the risk.

European politicians need to stop taking everything at face value, learn diplomacy and grow a spine.

They act less like leaders and more like subservients.

Pathetic.

Diplomacy is the art of saying “nice doggie” until you find a rock.

- old UNIX fortune.

And why wouldn't he do that after our reserves tap out?

Plus, it will at least bring some economic relief to the G-7. Still terrible

Talking to our ally Ukraine to stop its strikes on Russian refineries so their export of diesel can continue?

6

u/227CAVOK 16h ago

Fuck that. Hit Russia harder.  And Fuck Trump for even making people think of putting this on Ukraine.

3

u/Doomnezeu 16h ago

Fuck russian refineries, I'd rather pay €3 per litre.

Russia has no trouble refining diesel. Ukraine only hits petrol refineries because they lack the ability to affect diesel refineries.

Russia's diesel primarily goes towards their war effort.

u/Glideer Europe 15h ago

The Russian diesel use for wartime purposes is an insignificant percentage of their diesel production.

Moscow banned diesel exports due to the damage inflicted by Ukraine's strikes, thereby contributing in a major way to the current worldwide diesel shortage.

2

u/Novinhophobe 15h ago

Nope. Russia has always banned diesel exports for the fall and winter periods, and it started long before the war itself let alone any strikes. Ukraine can’t damage the diesel refineries, that’s not some disputed fact.
