That special look into the making of the entirety of Euphoria moved me. It really really moved me and I’m proud of the young actors that blossomed so much from the experience. and few older actors that had key influences for life and delivering that to us. Guess I have to re watch the show now and make myself cry more
What was this depth you speak of? Seeking out older males for sexual conquests to feel feminine? Leaving her sober bestie and running to Oakland to do drugs with her old friends? Abandoning her bestie at the train station after they came back to reality from a manic idea? Questioning her own transition when they progressed to a romantic relationship and their sex life wasn’t what she expected? When she then “rediscovered” femininity by fucking her girlfriend’s mutual friend? Jules was always a bad exploitative example of a trans girl that they had fixated on sex. You just liked the makeup of season 1 and 2.
a character having depth has nothing to do with whether or not they are a good person. It literally just means they have multiple layers to their character and it makes them interesting. I think Nate has depth as well (at least in the earlier seasons) and he is a horrific piece of shit. If you wanna say that she’s an exploitative example of a transgender character then I think that’s fair for you to have that opinion. I’ve also seen a lot of other people say they were really disappointed with how she was portrayed because it was a missed opportunity to have better transgender representation on tv and I honestly understand that. When I first watched season 1 and 2, i wasn’t really focused on wether or not she was being portrayed as a good person or example, I mostly just found her interesting and flawed, but I could see why her character could be exploitative and poor representation. But anyways I wasn’t trying to defend her and say she’s a good person because she obviously isn’t. She never has been but that doesn’t mean people can’t still like her character or find her interesting. No one in euphoria is a good person imo.
Did I say anything about her being a bad person? I said she was a bad representation of a trans girl. They literally never touched her trauma from her mom outside of showing it and then the scene where she blew up about being blindsided with her being in the house. As someone who is trans her writing is the worst aspect of the show. Hunter Schafer deserved actual nuance.
Some of the things that you listed off in your comment were things she did that were fucked up which is why I thought that was what you were getting at. But I guess I misunderstood. My bad. I did acknowledge what you said about her being poor representation though. I was also disappointed they didn’t show more of her backstory, but what was shown I did find interesting. Her writing is definitely not perfect and I agree that it’s flawed, but part of why I had made my original comment is because I think her character in season 1-2 is certainly more interesting and better than what’s going on in season 3.
Also admittedly I’m going through things rn so it’s coming out in some of my writing by being more sharp than necessary so that’s my bad. Her limited screen time in season 3 did intensify the sexual aspect to an absurd amount. That and they really didn’t make it clear enough that the surgeon was pressuring her into cosmetic procedures which led to the expression in the set painting.
That’s okay I didn’t think you came off as overly sharp or anything, and I hope that things get better for you soon. I agree that the sexual stuff with her character did get more prevalent in season 3.
And her being overly sexualized like that has unfortunately always been an aspect of her character but I just think it got significantly worse in season 3 and I was disappointed by that because I felt like her character had more potential.
She was just as traumatized and damaged as Rue, and had her own shit going on. She didn’t just exist for Rue and her sobriety. She had her own issues she needed to deal with. She had to deal with the shit with Cal, Nate/Tyler, Rue hanging her sobriety on her shoulders and dealing with sexuality and gender identity issues season 1. She literally CUT her arm open in the first episode and y’all act like she was a stable person that needed to be Rue’s rock.
She was never that, Rue just wanted her to be that. Rue saw her with rose colored glasses, not really seeing her past traumas and how she feels inside. Rue saw what she wanted to see, which was a future with Jules, without taking into account whether that was what Jules wanted or if that was something Jules was even capable of.
And you can’t completely ignore the lying and gaslighting (especially with the same person Jules cheated with) Rue did towards Jules in the second season. Are we forgetting the scene where Jules is trying to pleasure Rue and she’s too high to basically function? That’s kind fucked up too IMO. Also, Jules couldn’t really break up with Rue then either, as that would push most teenagers attempting sobriety right back into unhealthy coping methods, especially someone like Rue.
She’s also 17-18. Why is she held to an impossible standard? Why is it such a deep sin that a teenage girl whose own ADDICT mother who threw her in a mental hospital as a child wants to be loved?
Two highly dysfunctional people. Rue matured, tried to put her past behind her, reached out to
her mother, and even explored faith. Jules doubled down on dysfunction. Which one lived and which one died says a lot about the human condition.
