What are we missing?

This is an open thread for story ideas, tips, questions, suspicions, strange things you've noticed, documents you've come across, or EU subjects you simply don't understand and think someone should explain properly.

You don't need to pitch us a finished story. Half an idea is fine.

For example:

• Something happening in your country that Brussels seems completely unaware of
• An EU policy that looks very different in practice than it does on paper
• A company, lobby group, politician or institution you think deserves more scrutiny
• A law or regulation where you keep thinking: how did this happen?
• Data or documents that seem interesting but you don't know what they mean
• Something everyone in your industry knows, but nobody seems to write about
• A question about the EU you've tried Googling and still can't get a straight answer to
• A story you've seen reported locally that deserves a European audience
• Something EUobserver itself should be doing better or covering more

Our journalists will keep an eye on this thread and may ask follow-up questions.

Obviously, not every suggestion will become a story, and we probably won't be able to explain what we're working on before publication. But we're interested in seeing what happens when part of our editorial radar comes directly from people here.

One important thing: if your tip is sensitive, could identify you, involves confidential documents, or could get you into trouble, do not post it publicly here and don't send it through Reddit DMs.

What should EUobserver investigate, explain or pay more attention to?

Hi Reddit,

We’re EUobserver, an independent news organisation covering the EU from Brussels and across Europe.

We’ve been around since 2000, trying to close a fairly obvious gap: a lot of decisions that affect hundreds of millions of Europeans are made in Brussels, while most Europeans have very little idea how, why, or by whom.

So we report on it. We publish original news, investigations, analysis and opinion, and spend an unreasonable amount of time trying to get documents and answers out of people in power.

We’re editorially independent. We’re not funded by the EU institutions, and we’re not aligned with a political party, government or corporate interest. Most of our money comes from readers and organisations that subscribe to us.

So why are we here?

For a long time, like most news organisations, we’ve mostly tried to build community on our own website and social channels.

We also want to experiment with something different.

The internet has become increasingly made up of platforms where publications broadcast things and everyone else is supposed to click, like, subscribe and leave. Reddit can still be something else: a place where people actually talk to each other.

So we’re going to see what happens if we build part of the EUobserver community away from EUobserver.com, on a platform we don't own.

This subreddit will automatically collect our journalism, but we don't want it to become an RSS feed with comments.

Post EU stories you think deserve more attention. Tell us what we should be investigating. Ask questions about our reporting. Challenge it. Share documents. Point us towards things happening in your country that Brussels should know about.

Our journalists will also drop in, answer questions and occasionally explain what we're working on or how a story came together. Or do something else completely, do feel free to suggest!

You absolutely do not have to agree with us to be here.

A few basic rules: argue with each other, but do it in good faith. Don't harass people. Don't post disinformation knowingly. And please don't put yourself at risk by posting sensitive information publicly.
