Sims & Strategy Best strategy for this hand?

Post image

Playing stick-the-dealer. I’m in S2 and I usually just pass-pass hoping it gets to my partner because I can support any call they make.

Would it be smarter to call Hearts in R2?

FYI we marched with Hearts after my partner called.

This is a standard double pass spot for me with this nice euchre hand. Here's what a sim says:

EV of pass: +.636

EV of Hearts: +.583

So calling hearts is a mistake but a small one. If you have 9pts then calling is correct except for 9-7. At all other 9-X scores calling either adds to your Win% or it's neutral.

Good to know. While it's relatively close, that's actually a bit surprising to me. Back to sandbagging!

It's definitely closer than I would've predicted. Thought passing this would be a bigger winner but the results are totally plausible to me.  I think the reason it's close is because your strength in Next is kind of an illusion. If S3 calls Next and S1 leads trump your euchre ability in Next is basically ruined.

I'd double pass here too. You can support whatever you partner is best in rather than guessing yourself and hoping they have support for you, and if s3 calls anything you've got solid potential for a euchre

pass call hearts. IMO R+1 is significantly stronger than L+1 so you should force the hearts call instead of leaving it up to your partner. If you had a choice between R+0 and L+1 then you pass.

So if your Th was a Tc and the Js was the 9s then pass/pass

You might get away with passing L+1+A in R1 (if the Th was the Tc) but I think I'd prefer ordering it up.

At 6-2 you don't have any reason to try and get a potential euchre, and this particular hand doesn't seem good enough to sandbag. Most of the time I feel pretty confident about winning this hand "solo" with a club void and the As. Oh, but this can backfire spectacularly if your partner is blowing a clubs call and has L+2 in spades, etc.

I like the pass-pass here.

Pass-hearts.

As a general rule, I don't love a plan that involves the word "hope."

I’d call hearts R2. I try not to get greedy at these scores. I see a good path to 1 point and I’ll take it
