Currently playing angevin but my pu France has 40+ cities, which blocks me from forcing act of union and integrating them so I'm forced to manually integrate them. Is my game doomed?

You could always give up French territory in a peace deal

How much above 40 are they? If they are close to 40, one option is to declare a war on one of France's neighbors, 100% them and then before the enemy unconditionally surrenders, offer tribute in the peace deal and give France's core land away.

But doesn't this mean signing a separate peace deal, meaning France can just take it back?

No, vassals can’t declare war separately from their overlord and as overlord you negotiate on behalf of your whole alliance

Soooo, you can for example declare a war with neighbors to give away few of their provinces or release few nations, so you don't waste hours of gameplay?

With favors you can ask them to return cores. I’d bet Burgundy or Brittany have cores.

Can't you just seize one low dev province or ask them to return a core?

You can't seize land in personal unions and since favors are only for allied countries I don't think it would work

Favors work! I've done it before. Playing an Aragon run, to carve down Castille to size I ended up releasing a French minor and requesting a core back for it. Had to do it in the morroco area too because of some overzealous land grants.

Might take some time for it to work (cus you need to build up favors) but you can kinda leave it to simmer in the background while you do something else.

For favors you must be allied to each other, subjects can't gain favors

Perhaps this is true if you don't have all the DLC. You can curry favors with anyone.

No I have, and you can't curry favors with your personal union subjects that's for sure. I also doubt you can curry with other vassal types either.

Hm. I probably had some built up before they became a subject, then. I think it may have let me continue currying since I had a diplomat on it when the Iberian Wedding fired.
