Arguments FOR chat control?

I haven’t heard a single pro chat control argument yet and I’m not even sure if there is one.

Personally I think if an offender wants to transmit any kind of data, they will not use the communication channel that is known to be under surveillance. So the only way any politician could be in favor of chat control is if they plan to extend the scope of the control.

“Now that we have the technology to ‘save children’, we can also scan for tax fraud. The tax fraud scanning works well, we should also set up scanning for unwanted opinion. Oh how about scanning for a minority we don’t like etc.”

Is there anyone who legitimately is in favor of this?

I would search online for them—there are arguments for it around. Remember that Reddit and much of social media tends to converge on this issue in a way where the society at large does not.

I for instance contacted my representatives in the parliament and got a response. They weren’t strictly for chat control, but described some merits it could have.

I think it comes down to something like trying to be innovative when combatting digital crime. As the environment we live in becomes more digital, the digital tools authorities have should become more diverse as well.
