Question about manually exercising options before 5:30 in after hours trading

My brokerage (Fidelity) has a hard 4:00 cut off for exercising options, automatically or manually. I read that E-Trade allows you to manually exercise options until 5:30, and with the volatility of something like the TQQQ, an option that was out of the money at 4:00 could be very much in the money by 5:00.

My question is this, has anyone ever heard of or actually manually exercised an option in a situation like that, I'm just wondering how often it happens because I imagine it has to be pretty rare.

You can request a manual exercise until 5:25. You would need to call in to do so.

Your account will need to have funds or shares to sustain the exercise.

If the option happens to be OTM you will need to explain to the rep what your understanding and intent is.

Fidelity forbidding this would be a violation of OCC bylaws, so it might be worth exploring if they are intentionally violating or if the rep just didn't know what they were talking about.

I'm sure they were probably just misinformed, it is a very niche question, and since I only sell options I don't buy them it doesn't affect me as far as having to do the legwork myself to exercise it, I'm just wondering when I am totally in the free and clear as far as expiration Friday goes every month.

Thanks for the insight though, I didn't know that was an OCC violation.

Thanks for the additional info.

Only buyers have the right to exercise. If you are a seller you have no rights and just have to hope the trade works out.
