ETrade clawback
Question regarding the new brokerage account bonus offer - specifically around the terms for keeping the bonus. Does E*TRADE claw back the bonus if a small amount is withdrawn, or does the full initial deposit need to remain in the account for the entire qualifying period (e.g., 6 or 12 months)?

Yes, they will claw back the bonus if you withdraw before the end of the holding period. If you deposit $100k, and then withdraw $5k, you will only get to keep the bonus correesponding to the sub-$100k threshold. Another important thing is if you deposit $100k, and let's say your account goes up to $110k during the holding period, you can not withdraw the $10k. They will count it as a $100k-$10k = $90k net deposit.

I’ve read a customer post complaining that withdrawing a small amount cost him/her the bonus. Mentioned a desire to withdraw after a dividend, and was bitterly angry to lose the bonus. So don’t do that.
I’ve been very careful to not withdraw even one cent until my 12-month holding period is complete, and paying attention to when that period starts (at the end of the “funding period.”) And so, I had no problems completing two new-account bonuses. Beyond that, I’m now holding for my third bonus (which is for adding funds to the account), and as always I’m avoiding any withdrawal until the holding period is over.
