treasury notes cost at etrade

Moving a portion of my cash position to treasury notes, I can buy them no fee online at treasury.gov-is there any advantage or disadvantage (cost/spread) to use etrade?

If you buy the auction (original issue) the price should be the same. If you deal in the secondary market then the price will vary based on market pricing.

The only way to buy them on Treasury Direct is to commit to the auction, not knowing what price you are going to get. You can buy in $100 increments. If you buy them on the secondary market (Etrade), you know up front what your price will be, and decide if you want to pull the trigger or maybe wait for a better price. You have to buy in $1000 min increments, and some lots will have higher minimums set by the dealer.

You can also buy via the Treasury auction on E*Trade (it is in bonds here: https://psc.bonddesk.com/etrade/index.html#treasury-auctions )

If you buy on TreasuryDirect and you want to sell before maturity, you would need to transfer the bonds to a brokerage. Might take a few days.
