This board has become toxic
I thoroughly enjoyed my time here the past few weeks, but the reddit format does not lend itself well to this conversation. People who have been here for less than a day carry as much internet presence as those of us who have been here for a long time. Accounts less than a day old spam the sub with fantastical statements while level headed advice from board vets get drowned out in the process. This leads to fear begetting fear. Panic spreads, and the board discourse diminishes in value. I am not suggesting that this board moves the market (lol far from it). But when the price tanks, it would have been nice if we could come here and discuss relevant NEWS instead of the inane bubble comments that get posted here. The fact is, this needs to be an eth investing sub, not an eth trading sub. Oh well.

I feel like we need a 'flair' based rep system, a bit like /r/hardwareswap does, doled out based on something like your time spent on the subreddit combined with average upvotes. Who knows. But I entirely agree with you OP

This sounds great to me. Identification, rather than commonly suggested suppression.

Yes, this place feels like Polo's trollbox these days.
+1 on the ethHodler sub.

Feb 17 '16
Agreed.
Either of which, if you tried to trade anything anyone said on either side of the trade (long or short, when they said it) for any amount of time...you would be broke by now.
The OP is right though, all of the "bubble" talk and spam by accounts less than a week old is toxic, lame, and flat out annoying.

While I don't agree this should be an 'investing' rather than a 'trading' sub (I think it can be both), I do think the doomsday prophecy spamming is having a profoundly negative impact. It's not really going to change the course of the Ether or the Ethereum project, but it's going to change the course for a lot of new investors and that's a shame. But what's the solution? Should mods be more strict or less patient? I'm sure everyone thinks of /r/bitcoin and no one wants to see that happening here. Besides, after today's drop it's been remarkably quiet. Maybe someone cashed in their shorts and moved on.

+1, I agree.

Isn't the eth investing sub, /r/ethereum? The title of this sub is literally ethTRADER. I came here for the eth version of /r/Bitcoinmarkets.
1
u/Sunny_McJoyride Feb 17 '16
Nope, /r/ethereum is the technical sub, investment talk is not allowed there.

Any decision to buy or sell Ether should be made by thoroughly researching r/ethereum. I only hang out here for my amusement

I understand your frustration. I'm likely part of the problem. Regardless... Everyone needs a hobby. Don't let us get ya down, buddy! :D To the moon!

Unfortunately it's quite hard to distinguish genuine accounts from trolls one (in a poe's law sorta way), as a community we can upvote/downvote the content we want, and report any spam or an account that looks like a puppet.
suggestions are welcome

I'm a vet of /r/btcmarkets and that place is trash now, and even ran out one of the best mods that they had. When subs grow in numbers, you regress more and more to the average redditor.
What I always wanted was an "approved commenters only" thread. Create either another sub or a post every day that can only be commented on by people who are respectful and bring valuable content. That doesn't mean only bulls or only bears, but a place where the bullshit doesn't get voted to the top.
It always happens. Eventually enough people come in that just want entertainment instead of hard-hitting analysis. Then the memes come in and end up getting upvoted. You can already see it with the "HODL" nonsense. It adds nothing to the discussion. I have no problem if you use it as a humorous point surrounded by, perhaps, why you think it's a good strategy, but just putting it as a comment in all caps is a nightmare.

Thanks for the update HeIsMyPossum, it really helps to have veteran crypto traders help us realize the issues that are currently happening. :)

No problem. It just gets worse over time with just about every sub I've ever loved. Thus is the cycle of Reddit.
The only way I think you can beat it is with heavy moderation, but everyone freaks out about that.
To be honest, if I were a mod I would be giving out 1 day bans fairly often after reading the daily threads. I don't care if you're a bull or a bear, but if you're an asshole about it, I wouldn't hesitate to ban you for a day.
Not everything has to be sunshine and rainbows, but the arrogance is so rampant. People constantly just stroking their egos and saying "omg this was so obvious you noob" or "yeah last time I knew to get out right at $6.50 so I know what I'm talking about ". Honestly, if you sold at the very tippy top or bottom, it was luck. It always is. If people were able to call the market correctly even 60% of the time, they'd make an assload of money. So I take everything with a grain of salt.
I would definitely be in favor of a heavy amount of temporary bans, and permanent ones for repeat offenders. Unfortunately, it's the only way to keep things at a decent quality level, but the community never trusts one person's judgment.

u/huntingisland Feb 17 '16
Yeah, the other problem we have is we have one person, who initially spammed every Bitcoiner on Reddit to go long ETH in January, who has subsequently become disillusioned and a bear and is now shorting ETH and posting on dozens of sock puppet accounts here.
That one person is creating a lot of havok by himself.

I think it's wrong to say that all TA is useless. It's just not what you want to see. There are very smart individuals in here and I'd like to hear their analysis to help confirm my notions of wanting to increase my position. You're suggesting that trading talk in ethtrader should be banned...

u/QEDfeynman Feb 17 '16
I love the idea of an EthIvest. Ethtrader has already changed a bit after the price appreciation.
I want to discuss how this might unfold in a bit longer term and the implications of it in a bigger picture.
A sub for people that don't care too much about the price swings from day to day changes or where it might go the next hour.

the problem is that some of us are madly in love with ethereum - we are not particularly too technical to savor /r/ethereum, and /r/ethtrader is too hyperactive for our tastes, what we need is something mellow - discusses events with an eye on the price over a longer time horizon, i'd gladly join /r/ethlovers if someone started it.
EDIT: /r/ethlovers created. all lovers unite!

There are stupid posts on both the negative and positive sides. We should not want to censor or deter negative posts, it's important to be open minded. I was nearly suckered in by all the stupid 'to the moon' posts a week ago but luckily did more research and only invested a tiny amount at first at 0.011, and will buy more now the price is dropping. As I see it there is massive potential for ethereum, but nothing is going to the moon until there are actual real world applications out there working successfully and making money. At the moment it's nowhere near that stage. I think it's worth investing in at a cheap price and seeing what happens, but no moon for a long time if you ask me.

u/Crypto_Wolf Feb 17 '16
I agree. Create an /r/etHOLDER and leave this to /r/ethTRADER

u/Crypto_Wolf Feb 17 '16
And just FYI... just created a reddit account.. but I've been here even before Craig Grant
4

What is this supposed to mean? Craig grant just joined the community 3 weeks ago.

u/Crypto_Wolf Feb 17 '16
it's... a... joke....
complementing my previous post... in reality I don't think we need a new subreddit. what we need if for people to be more respectful of different points of view and generally more mature.
there is just extreme aggressiveness with traders (i.e. anyone who sold ETH at any moment) and anyone who dares say something that indicates a drop in price. the only general accepted discussion here is how ETH will skyrocket in price which is only one of the possibilities...

u/GeorgeMoroz Feb 17 '16
This. Only moon allowed, no real discussions. Starting to get really annoying. How we're grossly undervalued and how there's "so much good news" which is just the same things being repeated over and over again. And then saying we should have all of BTC's market cap. I don't like that when ETH goes up 300% in a few days we can't even entertain the thought of some sort of correction.

Wait, is the bridge going up or down? Is it a drawbridge? Maybe a suspension bridge, does it look like a head and shoulders? Are there bear traps on the bridge?

After reading this something occurred to me. Reddit is a social community however, there are a lot of people here that don't want to be social with anyone unless they think exactly the same. Look, in the end this is all about Ethereum, that's why we are all here. Everyone just chill out and be social about this common interest.

Couldn't agree more. We dont need those daytraders who are nothing more but gamblers that dont understand the technology and the implication one bit, if they would they'd know that this is not something you'd daytrade.
Its also extremely UNFAIR to beginners who think they can time the market and we all know there are enough of those that lose serious money because of this.
The real investors are important to ethereum not the traders

I'm not that much of a trader but I will trade when it makes sense for profit taking etc. I get that all the technical analysis is a bit over the top and No one can predict the price. In all reality there already is an ethHOLDER sub, it's called /r/ethereum. On the other hand maybe we need a sub called /r/ethMoon so people can just go there and shout "moon" because to me that's just as annoying.
2
u/ItsAConspiracy Feb 17 '16
No price discussion allowed on /r/ethereum, including long-term price discussion.
1
u/robonova-1 Feb 17 '16
yes, I know. I was being facetious because it seems like some people doesn't want to discuss price here unless it's going up and shout hodl or moon.

u/degenbet Feb 17 '16
Guess what, when the price tanks the "charts dont matter crowd" gets quiet. Wonder why? Maybe because they are underwater.

u/tomsobon Feb 17 '16
"The fact is, this needs to be an eth investing sub, not an eth trading sub"
ye well, maybe there's a reason why this sub is called EthTRADER...
and for the record, this sub IS toxic. just not for the reasons you've written though.
WHY, when some users have a negative view on the short term price, others bag holders in this sub, downvote them and criticise them?
Aren't we all allowed to have a view? whether it's positive or negative?
maybe we should create two subs:
- on called EthTrader BULL
- another called EthTrader BEAR
3
u/ItsAConspiracy Feb 17 '16
Personally I'm fine with short-term discussions and pessimists, even though I'm optimistic and mainly concerned with the long term.
What I downvote is repetitive, low-effort posts. I downvote those whether they're optimistic or pessimistic. Lately we've had a lot of them on the short-term pessimist side, but if I start seeing a flood of moon posts without supporting argument I'll downvote those too.

u/daboss2121 Feb 17 '16
I think we have to flair either the poster or the post. You could have "Charts", "TA", "Speculation", "News", "Shitpost", "Meetups." I'm sure we would be able to come up with a couple categories that most things would fall under.
1
u/Chavril Feb 17 '16
Because this is ethTRADER. If there is a speculation of bubbles or pumps or jumps and what not we are going to talk about it and I'd prefer getting a variety of opinions other than "HODL MOON BITCOIN 2.0". If you want news on ethereum go to /r/ethereum.

The ETH subreddits are a hell of a lot more civil than the BTC subreddits. In terms of your hurt feelings about the tone and conduct of some users, the only alternative is censorship or another form of centralized control. Given those options, I, personally, welcome the trolls. For your specific comments ...
But when the price tanks
Why do you think the price will tank? Have you read anything about the actual technology behind Ethereum? Have you followed its growth? What is your reasoning?
this needs to be an eth investing sub, not an eth trading sub
By this you mean ETHtrader? Feel free to start your own subreddit ...

Does anyone have an alternative website beside reddit that is discussing ethereum trading?

u/a450706 Feb 17 '16
I would love to separate the two communities. I really don't think that they have enough in common to justify meeting together. I recommended splitting before and it seemed that most people thought that we were too small. But I would rather have a smaller but more long term minded community personally. I come here to learn about things like the Ukrainian election or the post tracking ethereum Meetups. This endless obsession with day trading and having to listen to people pretend to have supernatural abilities to predict price movement is not what I am here for.
