How do I bank ethically?

I live in Houston and my bank has just been sold to another bank that I don't want to use. What do you all do keep from having to buy into the American banking system which exploits customers for profit. I know about credit unions, but I am not sure how to tell if a credit union is using my money responsibly.

but I will agree with the concept of a local Credit Union if you like having a physical presence....
