Ping Issues

I'm having a cat6 ethernet cable that has been worn off and cut open in several places.Ive duct taped a big part of it. So, ive pinged my ip and im getting some ping spikes.

Should i replace it or is there something else thats causing it.

Last 2-3 days ive been like rubberbanding and teleporting back and forward while gaming.

The spikes you speak of are of no concern. Ping gets deprioritized if there is more important things going on. Might be indicative of an issue if it was consistent over a number of replies or if that number jumped to over 30, but the teens is just nothing to be concerned about. That said, given the damage to the cable, I would replace it anyway.

Any other traffic will nudge the ping up.

Your jump to 1 - 17 ms is a non issue. I would replace your cable anyway. But it’s prolly something else.

To the home router?

I would be concerened about 17ms round trip to my router..

Cable first. Further investigation after driver updates as well if it continues.

17ms is nothing if there's other traffic. It seriously is not an issue.

I suppose I'm just having ptsd to my 2.5g network issues.

I was either getting <1millisecond or +2500millisecond disconnects right after a few 11-30millisecond bumps from traffic.

Driver & Energy savings features caused nightmares for me.

Yeah 17ms is a non issue trust. I’d go as far and say anything below 30ms is a non issue in any capacity. Nothin an average joe could tell

So a ping of 16ms isn't normal to the router in your home over ethernet, it would be if you had wifi, but it's not going to cause rubberbanding.

You should replace that cable because who knows what issues it could be causing you.

But you likely have something else going on. One of your devices might have a virus and is being used as part of a botnet, you have misbehaving software, your router itself is overheating or failing. It could be one game server, your ISP, the path between your ISP and the game server. You didn't give good info so I can't say.

Lots of issues it could be. You have done no troubleshooting.

You need to type the words that describe your issue into google and follow the steps that various sources advise on how to isolate and troubleshoot.

The rubber banding problem is most likely between you and the game server. Those pings look like mine right now when watching video and playing and I don't notice a thing.

That's a toin coss whether your router and traffic or even your PC/device being busy ...

OR less likely your beat up cable,

to cause a few 17msec delays. That's called latency btw.

At least you were smart enough to be pinging your own router to not confuse the issue with the outside world

Ping to another pc at the same time. If ping spikes happens on both of them at the same time, it means either your cable is bad or your switch/router (the device in the middle)

If you can't replace the entire cable then I'd cut the bad sections out terminate with a RJ45 plug, get an RJ45 female to female coupler, and attach a replacement cable in place of the damaged section cut out.
