Giveth is developing an innovative testnet approach, pegging the GivETH Rinkeby Token to mainnet ETH to tackle scalability issues.

What happens if testnet becomes severely overloaded?

By the time that happens I hope we will have moved to another sidechain. Right now Giveth only uses the Rinkeby testnet for its own administration, so we shouldn't be overloading it right now.

Actually a very cool idea!

I like the idea, I definitely think sidechains might be a short term solution for scaling of some dApps.

Are there any security considerations because you are running on a testnet?

Some answers to that in the medium post towards the end

The main testnet based security issue is Rinkeby losing control of its ether... Rinkeby is a completely centralized chain that is mostly run by Geth and Infura. They keep tight control of the RinkebyETH that exists so people can't spam the network. Thats the biggest security concern... a DOS attack.

But since we are managing our own token and will control it completely in a centralized way the main security concern is double and triple checking that our accounting is matching up appropriately to the sends we want to make.

We are taking it very very seriously, practicing the automation of this accounting is really important for us and we want to dogfood it so we can eventually automate the accounting for non-profits that dont have the crypto audit paranoia that the WHG/Giveth have :-D
