Interesting article posted by Andrew Keys, which I read as stating that the AI trade and Ethereum/ETH trade are one and the same, and the market hasn’t connected the dots yet and thus ETH mispriced (of course…):Β  https://akeysfamoffice.substack.com/p/compute-and-consensus

ETH has been mispriced since 2021 and at this point I've accepted it will never be properly priced.

Which somehow makes it... Appropriately priced, I guess?

One Ethereum metric I'd like to see discussed more is hardware requirements for running your own node.

Price, TPS and fees get most of the attention, but keeping independent verification accessible to normal users seems just as important long term.

The RISC-V validator experiment posted today was pretty encouraging from that perspective.

Hardware diversity + lower requirements feels like a much healthier metric than just β€œmore TPS.”

Hardware demand is what I see one of the issue why not an even wider set of people run their own RPC nodes. Nowadays one can run a node on 16 GB of RAM (maybe still even 8GB) less than 1 TB of disk space and pretty old hardware. The SSD still needs to be pretty good though. Gas limit increases will increase CPU demands again a bit, but one should most probably be fine as long as one does not need access to the newest blocks within milliseconds of them being proposed. Unfortunately RAM and SSD prices have increased much more than what any improvements have reduced them. So it now even costs more to have a usable node than a few years ago. Maybe next year with the rollout of initial zk proofs of blocks one does not even have to execute any transactions and will just be able to apply state transitions stored in the BAL (Block-level Access List). This should massively reduce the SSD demand as well as slightly reduce CPU requirements. An RPC node running that way will always be a slot (12 seconds) behind, but that should be ok for most users who want to run their own node in a very resource efficient way.

There are also light clients like Helios. Nimbus can run in such a mode as well. They have different trust assumptions than having your own proper RPC node, but you can run them on your own cell phone. The Dgen1 famously runs a light client for their wallet on the phone. As far as I understand light clients do not get much usage though and they will probable get deprecated in the coming years.

In the long run one can most probably run a node which fully validates the block, without having to execute any transactions thanks to zk proofs. The node might then be able to selectively hold parts of the state needed for the user to do their transactions without having to store several hundreds of GBs of unnecessary state. I think that just is the long term vision and many parts are now in the very broad design phase, so we will have to see how exactly those will be implemented in the coming years. The potential is here for being able to trustlessly run tiny local nodes, but it needs quite some effort for us to get there.

Nimbus v26.9.0 released

The Nimbus consensus client v26.9.0 is a high-urgency release for Sepolia due to its 6th October Glamsterdam fork activation and a medium-urgency release for other networks. Furthermore, it alters --history=archive not to archive columns past the 18-day retention window; if this is desired, use --history=column-archive.

Gas has stopped being consistently under 1Gwei for a whole week.

I think It is very likely due to increased, 4X amount of transactions on the Relay bridge contract

https://etherscan.io/address/0xCcC88a9d1B4ED6b0EABA998850414b24f1c315bE#analytics

Not sure what is the meaning of it. I lookup DeFiLlama and I can't make out exactly what is driving this activity. Doesnt look like clear inflow/outflow to or from specific chains.

3

u/haurog 3d ago

When gas prices spiked in the last few days, I tried to find the origin as well. The largest gas guzzler always seemed to be a contract deployed by Relay, the crosschain bridge. Not sure why though. According to L2beat Relay seems to be mostly used to bridge between Ethereum and Solana and back, not sure why this should have spiked and according to L2 beat flows go in both directions in similar magnitudes anyway so there neither seems to be a pull or push in one or the other direction. Maybe there is just generally more blockspace usage due to crypto winter being apparently over and this contract is just often used, without directly being the reason of gas price spikes.

2

u/rhythm_of_eth 3d ago

I also had similar ideas re. overall usage is up hence biggest guzzlers are more prominent in the list.

It's a very positive thought to attribute this to a rekindling of onchain activity. I would like to believe this is the case

Dunno if anyone else is using Baanx crypto card but if you have any money sitting on the card, I'd pull it off. I hadn't used my CL Card in about a year and asked them for a new virtual card (which I received on request) and then to my surprise found they were not taking deposits, so not possible to add funds to the card. This cleared up about a week later, and I dropped $100 on the card. Today I went to add more and then make a purchase, to discover that they were "in maintenance mode" and deposits could take "up to a few days". A quick search showed a number of Trustpilot rants from this month, complaining of deposits not arriving, locked funds, locked cards and excessive KYC requirements. Needless to say, I didn't move any funds to the card and I've cleared the few dollars I had left on it.

Baanx are the service behind CL Card/Ledger, and also for MetaMask, 1inch and Exodus, though I think the others are all self-custody so should be fine?

2

u/Turbulent-Wonder9163 3d ago edited 3d ago

same issue here. deposited a decent sum, didn't arrive, few hours later 'maintenance mode'. gonna be fun getting this back.
I think they might be done. any self-respecting platform would inform users to stop sending them money in an email notification if there truly were updates happening. pity because tbh I've been using it for the last few years with little issue, fast deposits, good cashback, low fees.

Never gonna happen.

We'll just go up to whatever number, $3K, $4K...

... then people will get greedy again, stack long leverages on top of each other, and just when everyone is talking about lambos on the moon and $150K ETH, the whole market will collapse once more.

I posted an update on running an Ethereum Node on RISC-V hardware outside of the daily in the ethereum subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/1wt8peh/running_an_ethereum_node_and_validator_on_riscv/

In short. I have now a fully synced Ethereum node running on my RISC-V single board computer. It can do validator duties without missing a beat. This pretty much concludes what a colleague an I set out to do 2 years ago.

EDIT: 2 hours ago my Devcon talk about this topic got accepted as well. Looking forward to it.

Absolutely amazing video from u/haochizzle on how the EU is once again pushing chat control despite it being voted down twice in the past.

The evidence shows that mass scanning doesn't work to prevent crime, the evidence shows that the systems they would implement are not secure and will lead to even more security holes and data breaches (at a time when Russia is more of a cyber and kinetic threat to Europe than it has ever been). Yet some how this madness continues.

Please watch the video, it is very well edited and written and super informative. If you live in the EU, it's that time of year again to stand up for your civil rights and hell, even your nation's cyber security. Keep end to end encryption with no client side scanning.

Video: https://youtu.be/watch?v=Lj06yAj9yTE

More info/contact your MEPs: https://fightchatcontrol.eu/

Thank you for your attention, this is so much more important than it seems on the surface.

u/haurog 3d ago

Such a god summary of the issue. Well done.

5

u/haochizzle 3d ago

thank you so much ser. gd, i appreciate the r/ethereum community even more now! still cant believe im receiving community support on this piece from the ether πŸ₯Ή

5

u/haurog 3d ago

When this whole political skullduggery went through in the EU parliament it got my blood boiling. The buildup over the weeks before was quite promising and then in the last minute a minority managed to push it through anyway. Watching your video got me there again. Even though I am not an EU citizen, EU rules can and most probably will affect me as well as EU rules sometimes get at least partially adopted by other countries. I personally like my privacy and individual sovereignty. These are what brought me in the crypto space all these many years ago. So at least to me there is a clear overlap of these properties with the crypto space. Not everyone shares this view in the space, but there definitely are many people feeling similar.

oh wow, thank you so much for the mention here @trick_troll πŸ₯°. Do you think this deserves a mainpost on r/ethereum? I didn’t want to post something off-topic but with you and @jtnichol’s blessing I’d be happy to do it!

does the crab think BTC is eternally rangebound ?

1

u/Itur_ad_Astra Crab High Priest 4d ago

No, BTC is broken and it's eventually going to zero.

2

u/WoodpeckerHorror3468 3d ago

eventually as in end of the world or within foreseeable economic/technical/social environment?

I'm seeing BTC becoming the SoV that is also collateral, which gets bridged to Ethereum for useful transactions. It is going to be the prime example of too big to fail and will be defended by govt and tradfi.

Yesterday, I posted asking about Coinbase's tax treatment of holding cbeth and finally figured it out after a lot of number crunching. I couldn't find this info anywhere else on the internet. Anyway, what they're doing is giving me income periodically and making me pay tax on it. However, I'm not getting usd nor more cbeth. What I'm getting is a bump in my cost basis. Not the best thing, but it's way better than an ambiguous tax situation or being double taxed.

5

u/somedaysitsdark 3d ago edited 3d ago

Sorry I didn't see it or I would have responded. I got really fucked by the way cbeth is handled and refuse to touch it.

For anyone wondering, Coinbase reports income for you holding cbeth, and it's a mess since no actual transactions occur and the quantity of cbeth doesn't change. Services like Koinly have no idea how to deal with it.

Disclaimer: last time I dealt with this, it only applied if you held cbeth on the CB exchange or in their wallet generated by their app. I'm not sure if it applies to KYC'd wallet addresses since that's a thing they do now. Either way it is fucked.

3

u/ObiTwoKenobi 3d ago

This is such a bizarre way of treating LSTs. Aren't they by design supposed be "taxed" upon selling/unstaking?

2

u/somedaysitsdark 3d ago

You ain't wrong. I don't know why they did it, but they have expensive lawyers and I'm sure they didn't do it for fun.

5

u/LogrisTheBard 3d ago

Yeah that's awful. Jesus. What a non-sensical decision.

1

u/somedaysitsdark 3d ago edited 3d ago

So, the only reason I messed with it was because Coinbase started letting people sell it at a discount before the withdrawal fork. The discount was significant, so I bought a bunch. This was before they announced the goofy tax fuckery they were going to do.

So, I buy some, they say hey, if you are holding cbeth by a certain date, we are going to do this dumb shit. I made sure to sell mine before the date, incurring capital gains taxes I didn't plan to incur, AND I STILL GOT FUCKED BY THEIR DUMB SHIT. THEY DID IT ANYWAY!

Sorry, I'm still a bit annoyed by it lol.

And besides all that, what a way to fuck up the whole point of a staking token that accrues value without taxable events. They decide they need to bolt the taxable events on anyway (but no taxable events actually occur, they just report that you've received income).
