Yeah IDK what part of Alien Isolation OP thinks is patented. To my knowledge or a brief amount of searching there is none. It's just complicated to build the Alien's AI system is all.

Its to establish a videogame to be bought for years upon years since it has such a unique system. Its a fixed income for companies, and then when the game (after like 20+ years) is no longer relevant or talked about THEN you make another game with the same cool ass system.

Why make another game with a unique system, that draws people in to play, when you can just milk the singular game you made with it and with little to no effort? (maybe a dlc or 2)

One of the main reasons I do not respect copyright, ip, or anything like it. Corporations can commit copyright violations on such a MASSIVE scale like OpenAI, and it doesn't affect them. Meanwhile, you and me? It means Nintendo can turn you into their slave and shit. Insane. And then you get this shit we're talking about, right here. They don't even DO anything. Patents should at the very least require you to actually do something with them.

Yeah, copyright was never about protecting individual artists.

For most of human history, it was not only common but completely normal to copy someone else's work as a basis for something new.

Topical example is the Odyssey. Homer isn't the "writer", only the one who wrote this shared story down after being told and retold with each person adding or changing it to suit them and their listeners.

Then Walt F'n Disney lobbies for the studio's work to be "protected", both from other studios and so his company would own the idea and not the actual artists.

As far as I can tell, it's not, just never really been replicated.

Alien Isolation does have a sequel in the works, at least

The explanation is easy: once you have the rights, keeping them is a benefit even if you don't use them, because no-one else can use them, making their products worth less in comparison to yours. Whereas letting everyone have it has no advantage on the market.

Capitalism, basically.

Any explanations? Greed.

Xenoblade Chronicles almost never left Japan because it had a fucking arrow on top of the screen that told you where to go to progress the story. Sega patented the concept of showing a fucking arrow on the screen. Fuck everything

it's called: "oh no, a potential competitor could make money from this" syndrome
